AI Article Synopsis

  • Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE), introduced in 2006, allows visualization of the colon but initially struggled with low completion rates and image quality.
  • Recent advancements in technology and bowel preparation have improved CCE's effectiveness, making it a useful complement to traditional colonoscopy.
  • Ongoing research in artificial intelligence aims to enhance diagnostics and staging, which could further elevate CCE's performance in polyp detection.

Article Abstract

Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) was introduced in 2006 as a novel way to visualise the colonic mucosa. Initially, CCE validity was limited by low completion rates (CR) and poor image quality. Through technical progress and improved bowel preparations, CCE now offers an adjunct to diagnostic colonoscopy. As referred in this review, several studies have shown promising results regarding polyp detection rates by the use of CCE. Improvements in CR and quality of bowel preparation are needed for CCE to be on a par with conventional colonoscopy. Research in artificial intelligence is evolving to aid in diagnostics and staging using CCE.

Background: Despite evidence that Alzheimer's disease (AD) related pathological changes occur earlier in women than men, women are diagnosed later. To address this care disparity, the Evaluating Memory as Part of Women's Routine Care (EMPOWER) program was established to integrate cognitive screening into routine gynecological well-woman visits. Recent work has demonstrated the feasibility of conducting subjective cognitive screening at the well-woman visit.

Background: Mild cognitive impairment, a precursor to Alzheimer's disease and related disorders (ADRD), is widely underdiagnosed. Routine screenings are key for identifying older adults with emerging neurodegenerative disease. As women have increased risk of ADRD and often use their gynecologist as their primary care physician, the annual well woman visit offers a critical opportunity to screen older women for ADRD.

Halide-free ion pair organocatalyst from biobased α-hydroxy acid for cycloaddition of CO to epoxide.

The cycloaddition of CO to epoxide (CCE) reactions produce valuable cyclic carbonates useful in the electrolytes of lithium-ion batteries, as organic solvents, and in polymeric materials. However, halide-containing catalysts are predominantly used in these reactions, despite halides being notoriously corrosive to steel processing equipment and residual halides also having harmful effects. To eliminate the reliance on halides as cocatalyst in most CCE reactions, halide-free catalysts are highly desirable.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) caused by multiple phenomena with days to months duration are increasingly common disturbances in ocean ecosystems. We investigated the impacts of MHWs on pelagic communities using spatially resolved time-series of multiple trophic levels from the Southern California Current Ecosystem. Indices of phytoplankton biomass mostly declined during MHWs because of reduced nutrient supply (excepting Prochlorococcus) and were generally more sensitive to marine heatwave intensity than duration.

Colon capsule endoscopy: Can it contribute to green endoscopy?

World J Gastrointest Endosc

December 2024

Endoscopy Center, Aishinkai Nakae Hospital, Wakayama-shi 6408461, Japan.

Climate change due to sustained carbon dioxide (CO) emissions poses a serious threat to human existence, such as extreme weather events that must be addressed in all sectors of society. Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a healthcare sector that produces high levels of CO emissions. Colonoscopy (CS) is the gold standard for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening that reduces the number of CRC-related deaths.
