The discovery of barbituric acid and research on its derivatives have long been of importance in advancements in modern anesthesia. This study estimated the incidence of pulmonary aspiration during general anasthesia for obstetric procedures performed in the peripartum period (Caesarean sections were not studied). The records of 1870 patients anasthetised without tracheal intubation were reviewed retrospectively. The diagnosis of aspiration was based on the anasthetist's written remarks and the postoperative course.

The effects of etomidate on corticosteroid synthesis were compared with those of methohexitone. We studied 40 neonates, 22 delivered by elective and 18 by emergency Caesarean section. Apgar scores, blood sugar and plasma concentrations of cortisol and etomidate were evaluated at birth and 2 and 6 h postpartum.
