The frequent occurrence of surfactants in urban wastewaters represents a multifaceted environmental concern. In this investigation, bio-electro-Fenton-microbial fuel cell (BEF-MFC) was developed for the degradation of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) from wastewater. The synthesised cathode catalyst (powdered activated carbon and iron oxide) facilitated the Fenton reaction in the cathodic chamber of the MFC, concurrently generating a maximum power density of 105.67 mW m. The overall performance of the BEF-MFC for SDS removal and power generation excelled the control MFC (C-MFC) having carbon black coated cathode under similar operating conditions. Although, the rate of SDS degradation was favourable in acidic pH, under neutral pH, 70.8 ± 6.4% of SDS degradation was achieved in 120 min in BEF-MFC. A comparison of environmental impacts of BEF-MFC with up-flow MFC and electrochemical oxidation using life cycle assessment tool suggests that BEF-MFC can be one of the promising technologies for the tertiary treatment of wastewater.

School of Pharmacy, Fudan University, 826 Zhangheng Road, Shanghai, 201203, P.R. China.

Hawthorn leave flavonoids (HLF) are widely used as an herb or dietary supplements for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. However, its gastrointestinal absorption behavior and mechanism have not been disclosed. In this study, gastrointestinal absorption and its regulation of 4''-O-glucosylvitexin (GLV), 2''-O-rhamnosylvitexin (RHV), vitexin (VIT), rutin (RUT) and hyperoside (HP) in HLF were investigated using in vitro, in situ and in vivo models.

Optical Detection of Proteins Using Microgel-Stabilized Pickering Liquid Crystal-in-Water Emulsions.

Department of Chemistry and Centre for Advanced Studies in Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh 160014, India.

Herein, we present a novel liquid crystal (LC)-based sensing platform utilizing microgel-stabilized Pickering LC droplets dispersed in water for simple and label-free detection of proteins in an aqueous environment. This could be achieved by tailoring the surface of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) LC droplets dispersed in aqueous medium through the interfacial adsorption of poly(-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel particles, followed by the introduction of model surfactants, such as anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate and cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. These surfactant/microgel complex-coated LC droplets underwent a configurational transition from radial-to-bipolar under a polarized optical microscope, upon exposure to model proteins, namely bovine serum albumin and lysozyme.

College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Qingdao University, Qingdao, China. Electronic address:

Microplastics (MPs) recycling, a promising approach to tackle its pollution, faces significant challenges due to the lack of effective separation methods. Herein, the optimized density separation accompanied with nonionic surfactants was employed to purify single MPs species from mixed systems. By adjusting the flotation fluid density, the single MPs can be separated from their mixtures in equal proportions (e.

Article Synopsis
  • RamA is a crucial regulator in bacteria, enhancing resistance to tetracycline-class antibiotics by activating the operon responsible for multidrug resistance.
  • The deletion of RamA leads to significantly reduced transcription levels of this operon, while restoring RamA reinstates normal function.
  • The study highlights RamA's role in bacterial membrane stability and suggests potential pathways for developing new antimicrobial treatments against resistant strains.
