Plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT), as an increasingly studied treatment alternative, has been widely regarded mostly as a surface tissue treatment choice. Although some techniques have been implemented for interstitial tumors, these involve some grade of invasiveness, as the outer skin is usually broken to introduce light-delivering optical fibers or even catheters. In this work, we present a potential non-invasive strategy using the stereotactic approach, long employed in radiosurgery, by converging multiple near infrared laser beams for PPTT in tissue-equivalent optical phantoms that enclose small gel spheres and simulate interstitial tissue impregnated with plasmonic nanoparticles. The real-time in-depth monitoring of temperature increase is realized by an infrared camera face-on mounted over the phantom. Our results show that a significant reduction in the surface heating can be achieved with this configuration while remarkably increasing the interstitial reach of PPTT, assuring a ∼6 temperature increase for the simulated tumors at 10 mm depth and ∼4 at 15 mm depth and opening up new possibilities for future clinical applications.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, a non-thermal light therapy using nonionizing light sources, has shown therapeutic potential across diverse biological processes, including aging and age-associated diseases. In 2023, scientists from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Intramural and Extramural programs convened a workshop on the topic of PBM to discuss various proposed mechanisms of PBM action, including the stimulation of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase, modulation of cell membrane transporters and receptors, and the activation of transforming growth factor-β1. They also reviewed potential therapeutic applications of PBM across a range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, retinal disease, Parkinson's disease, and cognitive impairment.

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach for the modal decomposition of a fiber laser beam is demonstrated using a spatial mode multiplexer. Since the modal decomposition is carried out optically, this approach is able to obtain the modal content at speeds up to the GHz level. In order to demonstrate such performance, we have applied this approach to the modal analysis of a -switched pulse generated in a multimode fiber with alternating intra-pulse mode content.

A 1645 nm end-pumped dual-channel Er:YAG vector laser that could generate two cylindrical vector (CV) beams simultaneously with different polarization orders is demonstrated. The laser is designed in a two-arm structure, wherein each arm places a q-plate (QP) to introduce intra-cavity spin-orbital angular momentum conversion, leading to the oscillation of two various CV modes in two arms, and finally output along two directions, respectively. The favorable experimental results illustrate high power stability and polarization mode purity.

Atomically precise nanoclusters, distinguished by their unique nuclearity- and structure-dependent properties, hold great promise for applications of energy conversion and electronic transport. However, the relationship between ligands and their properties remains a mystery yet to be unrevealed. Here, the influence of ligands on the electronic structures, optical properties, excited-state dynamics, and transport behavior of ReS dimer clusters with different ligands is explored using density functional theory combined with time-domain nonadiabatic molecular dynamic simulations.

Optical metasurfaces have found widespread applications in the field of optoelectronic devices. However, achieving dynamic and flexible control over metasurface functionalities, while also developing simplified fabrication methods for metasurfaces, continues to pose a significant challenge. Here, the study introduces a PCM-only metasurface that exclusively consists of voxel units crafted from different phases of phase-change materials.
