Objectives: To determine geographical relationships between smoking prevalence, COPD prevalence, and lower respiratory disease mortality in Delaware by census tract and county.

Methods: Data about Delaware residents with COPD, who are smokers, and/or have chronic lower respiratory diseases, respectively, were analyzed from publically accessible datasets posted on PolicyMap and Delaware Open Data. Data was linked to shapefiles in order to map prevalence and mortality rates by Delaware census tract and county. Geo-based descriptive analysis was conducted via choropleth maps.

Results: COPD prevalence was higher in urban areas with high smoking prevalence. The highest proportion of census tracts with high COPD rates occurred in Sussex County and the lowest was in New Castle County. The highest crude and age-adjusted mortality rate due to chronic lower respiratory disease was in Sussex County and the lowest was in New Castle County. Chronic lower respiratory disease mortality was highest among white residents, increased as age increased, and occurred more frequently in females than in males.

Conclusion: Sussex County had a high proportion of census tracts with high COPD rates and the highest mortality rate due to chronic lower respiratory disease. Urban census tracts displayed high rates of COPD prevalence and smoking prevalence. Identifying geographic focus areas can be used to direct future healthcare programs and public health initiatives. Future research should test statistical relationships between risk factors, geographic areas, and chronic lung disease outcomes.

Objectives: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and changing trends of communicable diseases among children and adolescents in China from 1990 to 2021.

Methods: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Database, epidemiological indicators for communicable diseases among the population aged under 20 years in China from 1990 to 2021 were selected to analyze the burden of communicable diseases in this population, and a comparative analysis was performed with global data as well as data from Western Europe and North America.

Results: In 1990-2021, the overall burden of communicable diseases tended to decrease among children and adolescents in China.

Background: Despite the physiological advantages of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), its optimal utilization during one-lung ventilation (OLV) remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate whether individualized PEEP titration by lung compliance is associated with a reduced risk of postoperative pulmonary complications during OLV.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials until April 1, 2024, to identify published randomized controlled trials that compared individualized PEEP titration by lung compliance with fixed PEEP during OLV.

Background: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) represents a series of lung disorders and is posing a global health burden. Systemic inflammation and phenotypic ageing have been respectively reported to associate with certain CRD. However, little is known about the co-exposures and mutual associations of inflammation and ageing with CRD.

Leaf Photosynthetic and Respiratory Thermal Acclimation in Terrestrial Plants in Response to Warming: A Global Synthesis.

Glob Chang Biol

January 2025

Key Laboratory of National Forestry and Grassland Administration on Forest Ecosystem Protection and Restoration of Poyang Lake Watershed, College of Forestry, Jiangxi Agricultural University, Nanchang, China.

Leaf photosynthesis and respiration are two of the largest carbon fluxes between the atmosphere and biosphere. Although experiments examining the warming effects on photosynthetic and respiratory thermal acclimation have been widely conducted, the sensitivity of various ecosystem and vegetation types to warming remains uncertain. Here we conducted a meta-analysis on experimental observations of thermal acclimation worldwide.

Background: For a long time, the penalty of imprisonment has been studied and criticized as ineffective in achieving the goals of resocialization and rehabilitation of offenders, and studies have associated incarceration with increased prevalence of disease. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization recommended decarceration as a prevention measure. The aim of this review was to analyze the effectiveness of non-exposure to incarceration in preventing COVID-19 and mitigating associated events.
