Only one report on the successful use of filgrastim (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor) in cats for severe neutropenia following azathioprine toxicity exists. Here, we report on a case in which a cat was prescribed methimazole but the medication was filled incorrectly with azathioprine tablets and the prescription label indicated a methimazole dosing regimen that was administered for three days before recognition of the error. On presentation, the cat's physical examinations were consistent with previous examinations before ingestion of azathioprine.

Article Synopsis
  • Azathioprine (AZA) is used to suppress the immune system in autoimmune diseases but can cause serious side effects like myelosuppression, especially due to genetic differences in metabolism.
  • The study highlights a case of a young Chinese woman with specific genetic variations who experienced severe side effects after high doses of AZA for lupus, without proper monitoring of blood cell counts.
  • A systematic review of similar cases reveals patterns in blood cell changes associated with genetic variants, aiming to improve clinical management and treatment outcomes for patients on AZA.

Article Synopsis
  • A 34-year-old woman on azathioprine for lupus developed serious liver problems, leading to a diagnosis of ductopenia after blood tests showed abnormal metabolite levels.
  • The case highlights the rarity of ductopenia as a side effect of azathioprine and suggests that monitoring blood levels of thiopurine metabolites could help identify patients at risk of liver damage.
