We investigated the effect of area postrema lesions and selective vagotomy of afferent fibers on emetine-induced nausea in rats. We evaluated the acquisition of the conditioned taste avoidance (CTA) to 0.1% saccharin solution after conditioning with emetine dihydrochloride (5.54 mg/kg, i.p., 1% BW). The CTA was measured in three groups of rats: a bilateral subdiaphragmatic afferent vagotomy group, an area postrema lesion group, and a sham lesion group. The bilateral vagotomy and sham groups of rats showed acquisition of CTA within 2 days of the test date. Taste avoidance was never conditioned in the area postrema lesion group. These results indicate that the area postrema plays a crucial role in the induction of emetine-induced nausea.

Liver-enriched antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) is a natural antagonist/inverse agonist of ghrelin receptor GHSR. Its truncated palmitoylated analog palm-LEAP2(1-14) promised anti-obesity properties because it exhibited favourable stability and an acute anorexigenic effect in our previous studies. Weight loss is a common early sign in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and negatively correlates with survival. In different cancers and metabolic disorders, high levels of serum growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) contribute to a decrease of food intake and body weight, acting through GDNF family receptor alpha-like (GFRAL). Here we report that GDF15 is highly expressed in the peripheral blood of ALS patients and in the hSOD1 mouse model and that GFRAL is upregulated in the brainstem of hSOD1 mice.

Objectives: To characterize the frequency and clinicoradiologic phenotype of cerebellar involvement in attacks of aquaporin-4-IgG positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4+NMOSD) which are incompletely captured in current diagnostic criteria.

Methods: Brain MRI scans from patients with AQP4+NMOSD in the Mayo Clinic database were reviewed, and those with cerebellar T2-hyperintense lesions ≤30 days from attack onset were included for clinical and radiologic characterization.

Results: From 432 patients with AQP4+NMOSD, we identified 17 (4%) with cerebellar attacks.
