This paper proposes a performance model for estimating the user time needed to transcribe small collections of handwritten documents using a keyword spotting system (KWS) that provides a number of possible transcriptions for each word image. The model assumes that only information obtained from a small training set is available, and establishes the constraints on the performance measures to achieve a reduction of the time for transcribing the content with respect to the time required by human experts. The model is complemented with a procedure for computing the parameters of the model and eventually estimating the improvement of the time to achieve a complete and error-free transcription of the documents.

In this work, a five-mode erbium-doped waveguide amplifier with low differential modal gain (DMG) is first proposed. A novel, to the best of our knowledge, gain equalization scheme for synergistic reconfiguration of refractive index and concentration doping is adopted to equalize the modal gains based on the dual-layer ring core structure. NaYF:5%Gd,20%Yb,2%Er@NaYF nanoparticles are synthesized by annealing treatment to improve the emission spectral properties and the concentration doped in a host core material.

Introduction: Appendicitis in pregnancy is the most common non-obstetric surgical condition which requires urgent evaluation and immediate intervention in a multidisciplinary approach. Pregnancy anatomical and physiological changes can mask the presentation of appendicitis and poses both diagnostic and management challenges.
Case Presentation: A 32 year old female, G3P2L2 at gestation age of 11 weeks by USS, presented with recurrent episodes of acute abdominal pain for one day, afebrile but accompanied with poor appetite, nausea and vomiting along episodes of per vaginal spotting which started three days prior.

UN Women is the United Nations "entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women". UN Women is an example of the institutions of global governance that followed the gender turn in women's rights over the past 2 decades. This opinion commentary unpacks a brief history of UN Women, and the ongoing disparities in gender diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in science, engineering, and medicine, not to mention in science communication, with the aim to shed light on the adverse impacts of gender essentialism and gender binary.

Surface flow of freshwater on Adriatic islands is rare due to the extreme permeability of the karst terrain. Hence, most helminthological studies of freshwater fishes in the Adriatic drainage have focused on mainland freshwater systems, while data from islands are scarce. We collected minnow, (Schinz, 1840), specimens in the Suha Ričina stream on Krk Island and screened them for helminth ectoparasites.

To investigate the prevalence and clinical spectrum of atypical or non-classical complications in adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) beyond macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) and to identify factors linked to their occurrence. Multicenter cross-sectional study of AODS cases included in the Spanish registry on Still's disease. This study included 107 patients (67% women), of whom 64 (59.
