The lotus ( Adans.) is an important aquatic plant with ornamental, medicinal and edible values and cultural connotations. It has single-, semi-double-, double- and thousand-petalled types of flower shape and is an ideal material for developmental research of flower doubling. The lotus is a basal eudicot species without a morphological difference between the sepals and petals and occupies a critical phylogenetic position in flowering plants. In order to investigate the genetic relationship between the sepals and petals in the lotus, the class genes which affect sepal formation were focused on and analyzed. Here, () and its homologous genes () and () of the class gene family were isolated from the flower buds of the Asian lotus ( Gaertn.). The protein structure, subcellular localization and expression patterns of these three genes were investigated. All three genes were verified to locate in the nucleus and had typical MADS-box characteristics. and were specifically expressed in the sepals, while was highly expressed in the petals, suggesting that different developmental mechanisms exist in the formation of the sepals and petals in the lotus. The significant functional differences between NnSEP1, NnMADS6-like and NnAGL9 were also confirmed by a yeast two-hybrid assay. These results expand our knowledge on the class gene family in sepal formation and will benefit fundamental research on the development of floral organs in

Introduction: Orchids are renowned for their intricate floral structures, where sepals and petals contribute significantly to ornamental value and pollinator attraction. In Section , the distinctive curvature of these floral organs enhances both aesthetic appeal and pollination efficiency. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying this trait remain poorly understood.

Identification and characterization of two APETALA2 homolog genes in lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) involved in sepal and petal development.

BMC Plant Biol

Marine and Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory, College of Geography and Oceanography, Minjiang University, Fuzhou, 350108, China.

Background: Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a significant aquatic ornamental genus widely utilized in horticulture for its decorative, culinary, medicinal, and other practical uses. It presents a variety of flower shapes, including few-petalled, semi-double-petalled, double-petalled and thousand-petalled flowers, making it an ideal candidate for studying the flower development of aquatic plants. However, the molecular mechanism of floral development in lotus remains elusive.

Study on the Genus (Caryophyllaceae)-A New Species from North-East India.

Plants (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Environmental Biology, University of Rome Sapienza, Piazzale Aldo Moro 5, 00185 Rome, Italy.

A new species of from the Kohima District (Nagaland of North-East India) is described and illustrated based on both molecular data (the ITS region of nuclear DNA) and morphometric analyses (clustering, PCA, DA, and MANOVA). The new species resembles cordata but differs with respect to the shape of the sepal (oblong, incurved at the margin vs. lanceolate, not incurved at the margin), petals (oblong or linear vs.

The phylogenetic studies of the tribe Alsineae (Caryophyllaceae) have revealed a clearer boundary between the genus and related genera, primarily relying on the morphological characteristics of style 3, stamens 10 and petals deeply bifid. However, the newly-published species in China, which have 5 styles or ten or more lobes per petal, challenge this boundary and necessitate further studies. In this paper, we reviewed six newly-published Chinese species of , utilising both molecular phylogenetic evidence from nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and four plastid regions (, , , ) and morphological evidence.
