[Study by radioactive microspheres of bone microcirculation in aseptic osteonecrosis of the femoral head].

Thirty-two hips affected by aseptic necrosis, four of them post-traumatic and 12 contralateral hips thought to be healthy have been studied by combining superselective arteriography with the injection of radioactive microspheres. It has been possible to show that aseptic necrosis begins with a global ischaemia and is followed by an incomplete revascularisation leaving a necrotic area. On the border between the two areas hypervascularity produces a zone of fragility where microfractures develop with detachment of a sequestrum. The presumed opposite hip is almost always, even in traumatic lesions, the site of a hypovascularity which seems to suggest a predisposition to the lesion. There is a correlation between radiological and clinical worsening and the development of revascularisation in the femoral head.

Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is a recommended locoregional strategy for intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), whereas, the effect is insufficient to reverse the immunosuppression tumor microenvironment, and the overall benefits for patients remain to be improved. In this study, a multifunctional microsphere (MS) I-ICT/R848-MS is developed to propose an approach combined with TARE, icaritin (ICT) and immune modulator resiquimod (R848). ICT and iodine-131 (I) radiation can induce immunogenic cell death, which, in combination with R848, will boost dendritic cell (DC) maturation.

Tc/Y radiolabeled biodegradable gel microspheres for lung shutting fraction assessment and radioembolization in hepatocellular carcinoma theranostics.

Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) is a well-established clinical therapy for the treatment of patients with intermediate to advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or those who are ineligible for radical treatment. However, commercialized radioactive microspheres still have some issues, such as high density, complicated preparation, non-biodegradability. Furthermore, the use of different radioactive microspheres during TARE and lung shunt fraction assessment has led to inconsistencies in biodistribution in certain cases.

Measurement of β-nuclides in various solutions using plastic scintillation microspheres.

Background: Scintillation cocktails cannot directly measure samples with extreme acidity or alkalinity in β-nuclide liquid scintillation analysis. Plastic scintillation microspheres (PSm), as a novel scintillation material, offer the potential to overcome these limitations by allowing direct mixing with a variety of solutions for measurement, particularly in challenging chemical environments.

Results: This study evaluated the performance of PSm in various chemical environments, including four acids (nitric, hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids), an alkaline solution (NaOH), a high-salinity solution, and methanol.

As the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents a significant global health challenge. This paper provides an introduction and comprehensive review of transarterial radioembolization (TARE) with Yttrium-90 (Y90), a widely performed transcatheter procedure for HCC patients who are not suitable candidates for surgery. TARE involves the targeted delivery of radioactive microspheres to liver tumors, offering a promising treatment option for managing HCC across various stages of the disease.

Locoregional treatments (LRT) continue to advance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) or transarterial radioembolization (TARE) with radioactive Yttrium (Y90) microspheres is currently widely accepted, and external beam and stereotactic body radiation (EBRT/SBRT) are increasingly used as LRT. Assessment of treatment response after these radiation-based therapies can be challenging, given that the adjacent liver also undergoes treatment related changes, inflammatory changes occur, and there is a variable time for response to develop.
