Galanin is a peptide that is conserved among different species and plays various roles in an organism, although its entire role is not completely understood. For many years, galanin has been linked mainly with the neurotransmission in the nervous system; however, recent reports underline its role in immunity. Zebrafish () is an intensively developing animal model to study infectious diseases. In this study, we used larval zebrafish to determine the role of galanin in bacterial infection. We showed that knockout of galanin in zebrafish leads to a higher bacterial burden and mortality during and infection, whereas administration of a galanin analogue, NAX 5055, improves the ability of fish to control the infection caused by both pathogens. Moreover, the transcriptomics data revealed that a lower number of genes were regulated in response to mycobacterial infection in -/- mutants compared with their wild-type counterparts. We also found that galanin deficiency led to significant changes in immune-related pathways, mostly connected with cytokine and chemokine functions. The results show that galanin acts not only as a neurotransmitter but is also involved in immune response to bacterial infections, demonstrating the complexity of the neuroendocrine system and its possible connection with immunity.

Introduction: The enteric nervous system (ENS) in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract is complex and comprises many neurons, which are differentiated in terms of structure, function and neurochemistry. Neuregulin 1 (NRG 1) is one of the neuronal factors synthesised in the ENS about the distribution and functions of which relatively little is known. The present study is the first description of the distribution of NRG 1 in the ENS in various segments of the porcine small intestine.

Studies conducted on mammalian models have indicated the role of galanin-like peptide (GALP) in appetite regulation. For the first time, the present study examines the effects of this peptide on feed consumption and behavioral changes, as well as its interaction with dopaminergic and neuropeptide Y (NPY) systems in broilers. In experiment 1, broilers were injected with GALP (0.

GnRH governs reproduction by regulating pituitary gonadotropins. Unlike most vertebrates, gnrh-/- zebrafish are fertile. To elucidate the role of the hypophysiotropic-Gnrh3 and other mechanisms regulating pituitary gonadotropes, we profiled the gene expression of all individual pituitary cells of wild-type and gnrh3-/- adult female zebrafish.

Mood and anxiety disorders are complex psychiatric conditions shaped by the multifactorial interplay of genetic, epigenetic, and neuropeptide factors. This review aims to elucidate the intricate interactions among these factors and their potential in advancing personalized medicine. We examine the genetic underpinnings, emphasizing key heritability studies and specific gene associations.

Objectives: Coronary microvascular dysfunction is present in large percentage of the population, and it has been shown to have a pathological and prognostic role in many conditions. Therefore, early detection of microvascular dysfunction is important, especially in selected populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of galanin with coronary flow reserve (CFR) in prehypertensive individuals to determine whether it can be used as a marker to detect microvascular dysfunction.
