Published: August 2021

Introduction: This short communication presents a novel report on the occurrence of Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus in the Brazilian state of Rondônia.

Methods: Two specimens were collected inside dwellings and identified using dichotomous keys.

Results: The present study showed the extensive geographic distribution of P. rufotuberculatus and the increased number of species in the state of Rondônia.

Conclusions: This new record of P. rufotuberculatus is important for understanding the epidemiology of Chagas disease because this species is found naturally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Studies on the ecology, biology, and vector-host-parasite interactions of this species are essential for surveillance programs.

is a Neotropical taxa of 16 species, some more widespread than others, that act as vectors of , the etiologic agent of Chagas disease (CD). This group is associated with mammalian reservoir niches. There are few studies of the biogeography and niche suitability of these triatomines.

Chagas disease is a significant public health risk in rural and semi-rural areas of Venezuela. Triatomine infection by the aetiological agent Trypanosoma cruzi is also observed in the Metropolitan District of Caracas (MDC), where foodborne T. cruzi outbreaks occasionally occur but active vector-to-human transmission (infection during triatomine bloodmeal) is considered absent.

Trends in evolution of the Triatomini tribe (Hemiptera, Triatominae): reproductive incompatibility between four species of geniculatus clade.

Article Synopsis
  • The geniculatus clade includes several species of triatomine bugs, some of which have been studied for their role in transmitting Chagas disease, but no natural hybrids have been previously documented among these species.
  • Experimental crossings between species within the megistus and lignarius groups were performed to assess reproductive compatibility; results showed no egg hatching, indicating prezygotic barriers and confirming specific distinctions among the species.
  • The findings suggest that while hybridization is possible in other triatomine groups, the geniculatus clade displays prezygotic barriers that prevent hybrid formation, suggesting its significance for evolutionary studies in this area.

Background: This study is the first report of the species Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus in Roraima, a state in northern Brazil.

Methods: We collected specimens from a residence in the municipality of Rorainópolis.

Results: Our findings confirmed the occurrence of this species in Roraima, increasing the number of registered species from six to seven.

Chagas' disease is transmitted mainly by members of the subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae). Among them, Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of the disease in Southern Cone of Latin America. In order to contribute to knowledge of the genetic variation between triatomine vectors, in the present study, we analyzed the intraspecific and interspecific variations of the seven mitogenomes available from Triatominae.
