Petroleum hydrocarbon (PH) contamination of soils remains a major threat to environmental health and food security. A two-years phytoremediation study was conducted on a crude oil polluted soil to assess changes in soil total petroleum hydrocarbon concentration (TPH) following use of pawpaw seed powder (PSP), moringa seed powder (MSP) and their combination (PSP + MSP) as organic stimulants in cowpea cultivation. The stimulants were tested at different application rates (100, 150, 200 and 250 g m), with the control (No stimulant) for their effectiveness in reducing TPH and accelerating the removal rate (R) of PH from soil. The TPH did not differ significantly (p < 0.05) among the treatments in year 1, but was highest in the control (11,600 mg kg) and least in 200 g m PSP (7400.0 mg kg). In year 2, mean TPH varied significantly (p < 0.05) and remained highest in control (7100 mg kg) but lowest in 150 g m PSP (2700 mg kg). Application of 150 g m PSP gave the highest R (78.2%), followed by 150 g m PSP+MSP (77.4%), and least by the control (42.7%) over two years of study. The average fresh pod yield of cowpea over two years was highest in 250 g m PSP (2416.67 kg ha), followed by 150 g m PSP (2173.34 kg ha) and least in control (1302.22 kg ha). There was significant negative association between TPH and fresh pod yield (r = -0.403; p < 0.01). However, application of 150 g m PSP appeared most effective for enhanced phytoremediation of crude oil polluted soil and improvement of cowpea yield.

Emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) are a growing concern for aquatic ecosystems, underscoring the need for advanced risk assessment methodologies. This study employed an integrated approach to evaluate the risks associated with 563 EOCs across 13 monitoring sites along the Sava River in Croatia. Sampling was conducted during the winter and spring months, spanning February to May.

Background: Metoclopramide, a dopamine antagonist employed for its antiemetic effects, can precipitate neuropsychiatric adverse effects, including extrapyramidal symptoms and, in a few instances, acute psychosis. Although there have been reports of metoclopramide-induced psychosis in elderly individuals, there is no documentation of such incidents in children as far as we are aware.

Case Presentation: This case report describes an 11-year-old girl with a history of mild intellectual disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, managed with 10 mg of methylphenidate daily.

Postmortem distribution of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine in 51 cases.

J Anal Toxicol

December 2024

Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office, Fort Worth, TX 76104, United States.

The prevalence of mitragynine (kratom) in forensic toxicology casework has steadily increased over time. Readily available and currently legal, mitragynine is widely used for its stimulant and, depending on concentration, sedative effects. Our laboratory analyzed various fluid and tissue specimens from 51 postmortem cases to investigate the distribution of mitragynine and its active metabolite 7-hydroxymitragynine.

The emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in the global drug market since the 2000s has posed major challenges for regulators and law enforcement agencies. Among these, synthetic cathinones have gained prominence due to their stimulant effects on the central nervous system, leading to widespread recreational use. These compounds, often marketed as alternatives to illicit stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine, have been linked to numerous cases of intoxication, addiction and death.
