The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in biological tissues is an integral parameter behind the application of electromagnetic energy to biomedical technologies; however, its behavior is far from being fully characterized. In this study, we apply digital image correlation (DIC) to non-invasively measure the microscale thermal expansions of recently excised embryonic E18 rodent brain tissue slices. Although the CTE has been measured previously in soft tissues, the literature surrounding the expansion of brain tissue remains sparse. Previous work in measuring the thermal expansion behavior of soft tissue often simplifies the results into a single measurement of a linear CTE parameter and fails to convey the temperature-dependent nonlinearity that exists. In this work, we demonstrate that: (1) the coefficient of brain tissue is more similar to fat than blood, and (2) there exists a significant nonlinear increase in CTE at physiologically-relevant temperatures. This suggests some limitations with the interpretation of previously reported values of the CTE, which are often measured at room temperature.

In this work, we introduce spatial and chemical saturation options for artefact reduction in magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) and assess their impact on T and T mapping accuracy. An existing radial MRF pulse sequence was modified to enable spatial and chemical saturation. Phantom experiments were performed to demonstrate flow artefact reduction and evaluate the accuracy of the T and T maps.

Background: The treatment of glioblastomas (GBM) with radiation therapy is extremely challenging due to their invasive nature and high recurrence rate within normal brain tissue.
Purpose: In this work, we present a new metric called the tumour spread (TS) map, which utilizes diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to predict the probable direction of tumour cells spread along fiber tracts. We hypothesized that the TS map could serve as a predictive tool for identifying patterns of likely recurrence in patients with GBM and, therefore, be used to modify the delivery of radiation treatment to pre-emptively target regions at high risk of tumour spread.

Kisspeptin (KISS1), originally catalogued as metastin because of its capacity as a metastasis suppressor in human melanoma and breast cancer, is now recognized as the major puberty gatekeeper and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neuroendocrine system modulator. It is a member of the family of RFamide-related peptides that also includes the neuropeptide FF group, the gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, the prolactin-releasing peptide, and the 26RFa peptides. The KISS1 precursor peptide is processed into a family of peptides known as kisspeptins.
