This study analyzed the effectiveness of an elementary school Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program during middle school transition in Portugal, and the influence of gender, classroom size and student's perception of two school climate dimensions (student-student relationships and teacher-student relationships) upon its effectiveness. One-thousand-sixty-three students (M age = 9.14; SD = 0.64; 51.2% were boys) participated: 702 in the intervention group and 361 in the control group, assessed at pretest, post-test, and follow-up 10 months later (after middle school transition). Multilevel analyses identified that the program was effective in enhancing social awareness, self-control, and self-esteem, even after middle school transition. Results also showed that there no differential gains by gender, and that intervention group students who had more positive perceptions of student-student relationships and teacher-student relationships displayed more positive trajectories in self-esteem. Students from smaller fourth-grade classrooms displayed lower social awareness than students from larger fourth-grade classrooms, but a more positive trajectory in that competence than students from medium and larger fourth-grade classrooms. Background: Apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) has been identified as the major genetic risk factor for late onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our lab has demonstrated that chronic administration of Aβ12-28P, a synthetic peptide that blocks apoE4/Aβ binding, in middle-aged transgenic AD mice significantly ameliorates pathology progression, resulting in reduced Aβ plaques deposition and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) along with improved memory and cognition. However, whether blocking apoE4/Aβ interaction by Aβ12-28P also has an ameliorating effect on the neuronal and cognitive function of old AD mice where Aβ pathology has been extensively developed remains unknown.

The most recent Alzheimer's clinical trials, including those which reported successful outcomes, use neuroimaging biomarkers of both amyloid and tau for screening participants and demonstrating a treatment effect on pathology. Some of these trials, notably Lecanemab, hint at a potential sex bias in treatment outcome, alluding to major implications for clinical practice when recommending treatment options. Sex differences in treatment response are not surprising given that women are at greater risk of progression to AD dementia, particularly if they carry APOEe4.

Background: Black/African American adults (B/AAs) are 64% more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD) than non-Hispanic White adults (NHWs), and risk factors, including non-biological determinants, are not fully delineated. Social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status and lifetime discrimination, are associated with cognitive decline and increased AD risk. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships of a perceived discrimination measure with sociodemographic characteristics and cognitive function in a racially diverse cohort of middle-aged adults with a parental history of AD.

Background: Data from high-income countries (HICs) suggest a decline in age-specific incidence rates of dementia. However, this has happened primarily in HICs, with low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) facing two main challenges: a higher burden of risk factors and, in general, a faster ageing population.
