Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) provides alternatives technique to produce a nanosize activated carbon from biomass with a high surface area. Herein, this study we prepared empty fruit bunch-based activated carbon (EFBHAC) using HTC technique. The activated carbon was then functionalized with KCO and Cu(NO) to produce bifunctional nano-catalyst for simultaneous esterification-transesterification of waste cooking oil (WCO). The physicochemical properties were performed i.e. N sorptions analysis, TPD-CO/NH, FESEM, EDX, FTIR and XRD analysis. The results revealed that produced EFBHAC possessed a BET surface area of 4056.17 m g, with pore volume of 0.827 cm g and 5.42 nm of pore diameter resulting from hydrolysis, dehydration decarboxylation, aromatization and re-condensation during HTC process. Impregnation of EFBHAC with KCO and Cu(NO) granted a high amount of basicity and acidity of 9.21 mmol g and 31.41 mmol g, respectively, accountable to high biodiesel yield of 97.1%, produced at the optimum condition of 5 wt% of catalyst loading, 12:1 of methanol to oil molar ratio at 70 °C for 2 h. More than 80% of biodiesel was produced after the 5th cycle depicted the good reusability. The transformations from WCO to biodiesel was confirmed via H NMR, FTIR and TGA analysis. Fuel properties revealed kinematic viscosity of 3.3 mm s, cetane number of 51, flash point of 160.5 °C, cloud and pour point of 11 °C and -3 °C, respectively. These results show the excellent potential of waste materials to prepare bifunctional nano-catalysts to produce higher biodiesel yield which has potential to be commercialized.

Biochars (BCs) derived from waste-branches of apple tree, grape tree, and oak were developed for direct solid-phase extraction (SPE) of five benzodiazepines (BZDs) in crude urine samples prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. Scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyzer, X-ray diffractometry, N adsorption/desorption experiments, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry characterizations revealed the existence of their mesoporous structure and numerous oxygen-containing functional groups. The obtained BCs not only possessed high affinity towards BZDs via π-π and hydrogen bond interactions, but also afforded the great biocompatibility of excluding interfering components from undiluted urine samples when using SPE adsorbents.

A wild, adult male pied butcherbird (Cracticus nigrogularis) accidentally ingested 263 mg/kg of oral phenobarbital. Pronounced sedation was observed by 30 mins, followed by altered consciousness, marked ataxia and increased respiratory effort. The serum phenobarbital level on admission to a wildlife hospital was 84.

There is an initiative driven by the carbon-neutrality nature of biochar in recent times, where various countries across Europe and North America have introduced perks to encourage the production of biochar for construction purposes. This objective aligns with the zero greenhouse emission targets set by COP27 for 2050. This research work seeks to assess the effectiveness of biochar in soils with varying grain size distributions in enhancing the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC).

Objectives: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerular disease in China, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aims to explore the regulatory role of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway in autophagy and mesangial proliferation during renal injury in IgA.
Methods: The activity of mTOR and autophagy was evaluated in kidney samples from IgAN patients and in an IgAN mouse model induced by oral bovine serum albumin and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) injection.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation play an import role in different human pathologies. In this context, mitochondrial targeting of potentially protective antioxidants by their coupling to the lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cation (TPP) is widely applied. Employing a six‑carbon (C) linker, we recently demonstrated that mitochondria-targeted phenolic antioxidants derived from gallic acid (AntiOxBEN) and caffeic acid (AntiOxCIN) counterbalance oxidative stress in primary human skin fibroblasts by activating ROS-protective mechanisms.
