To improve the efficiency and applicability of the washing pre-treatment for combustion, pyrolysis and gasification, a modified approach was developed in the present study. Two novel washing approaches were tested using wheat straw and empty fruit bunches of oil palm: multiple-step washing with fresh water (SWFW) and wastewater recirculation (SWWR). SWFW showed the high removal of K (<68%), Cl (<99%), S (<80%), N (<58%), and ash (<52%) reducing fouling, slagging, and corrosion propensity of the biomass. Furthermore, with one-third the amount of water used in SWFW, SWWR showed similar to higher efficiency than SWFW with relatively better energy (98%) yields. Industrial-scale pilot testing was also conducted for the validation of the SWWR approach, which showed similar findings as the lab-scale results. The effect of a high washing temperature and pressing on washing efficiency and characterisation of wastewater was also determined. Overall, SWWR with pressing is recommended for industrial applications.

To ensure high quality of food and water, the identification of traces of pathogens is mandatory. Rapid nucleic acid-based tests shorten traditional detection times while maintaining low detection limits. Challenging is the loss of nucleic acids during necessary purification processes, since elution off solid surfaces is not efficient.

Background: The gradual extrusion of water-soluble intracellular components (such as proteins) from microalgae after pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment is a well-documented phenomenon. This could be utilized in biorefinery applications with lipid extraction taking place after such an 'incubation' period, i.e.

The development of advanced bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is crucial for the practical application of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, porous carbon nanosheets integrated with abundant graphene-wrapped CoO and CoNx (CoO/CoNx-C) were successfully fabricated through a simple one-step pyrolysis. With convenient porous channel and large accessible surface, abundant CoO/CoNx species and graphene wrapping structure, CoO/CoNx-C exhibited a half-wave potential of 0.

This work aims to recover rare earths from wind turbines NdFeB magnets through pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical techniques. First, a NdFeB hydride powder is obtained by decrepitation with hydrogen. Subsequently, this powder was subjected to a chlorination roasting process and successive leaching with water to bring the metals into solution.

Unwanted nonspecific adsorption caused by biomolecules influences the lifetime of biomedical devices and the sensing performance of biosensors. Previously, we have designed B-M-E triblock proteins that rapidly assemble on inorganic surfaces (gold and silica) and render those surfaces antifouling. The B-M-E triblock proteins have a surface-binding domain B, a multimerization domain M and an antifouling domain E.
