Two frontier crystalline porous framework materials, namely, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been widely explored owing to their outstanding physicochemical properties. While each type of framework has its own intrinsic advantages and shortcomings for specific applications, combining the complementary properties of the two materials allows the engineering of new classes of hybrid porous crystalline materials with properties superior to the individual components. Since the first report of MOF/COF hybrid in 2016, it has rapidly evolved as a novel platform for diverse applications. The state-of-art advances in the various synthetic approaches of MOF/COF hybrids are hereby summarized, together with their applications in different areas. Perspectives on the main challenges and future opportunities are also offered in order to inspire a multidisciplinary effort toward the further development of chemically diverse, multi-functional hybrid porous crystalline materials.

Currently, the development of high-performance adsorbents for the removal of nanoplastics in complex aquatic environments is challenging. In this study, a functionalized polyethyleneimine-phosphorylated microcrystalline cellulose/MoS (PEI-PMCC/MoS) hybrid aerogel was prepared and applied to remove carboxyl-modified polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoplastics from the aqueous solution. Benefiting from the introduced functional groups and the expanded lamellar structure in MoS nanosheets as well as the highly porous 3D structure of the aerogel, PEI-PMCC/MoS demonstrated high efficiency in PS-COOH nanoplastics removal, achieving a 402.

Harnessing ionic gradients to generate electricity has inspired the development of nanofluidic membranes with charged nanochannels for osmotic energy conversion. However, achieving high-performance osmotic energy output remains elusive due to the trade-off between ion selectivity and nanochannel membrane permeability. In this study, we report a homogeneous nanofluidic membrane, composed of sulfonated nanoporous carbon (SPC) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (T-CNF), engineered to overcome these limitations.

Chronic wounds present a major healthcare challenge around the world, and significant hurdles remain in their effective treatment due to limitations in accessible treatment options. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with multifunctional differentiation and modulatory properties have been delivered to chronic wounds to enhance closure but have limited engraftment when delivered without a scaffold. In this study, hybrid porous hydrogel foams composed of modified polyvinyl alcohol and gelatin were developed that are suitable for rapid and facile MSC encapsulation, fully degradable, and supportive of wound healing.

Rational design of effective cathode host materials is an effective way to solve the problems of serious shuttle and slow conversion of polysulfides in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). However, the redox reaction of sulfur differs from conventional "Rocking chair" type batteries and involves a cumbersome phase transition process, so a single-component catalyst cannot consistently and steadily enhance the reaction rate throughout the redox process. In this work, a hybrid composed of magnetopyrite FeS catalyst-modified with N/S-doped porous carbon spheres (FeS@NSC) is proposed as a novel sulfur host to synergistically promote the adsorption and redox catalysis conversion of polysulfides.

The NiCoO Nanosheets@Carbon fibers composites have been successfully synthesized by a facile co-electrodeposition process. The mesoporous NiCoO nanosheets aligned vertically on the surface of carbon fibers and crosslinked with each other, producing loosely porous nanostructures. These hybrid composite electrodes exhibit high specific capacitance in a three-electrode cell.
