Nicotine regulates smoking patterns.

Background: Since 1953, the sales-weighted average "tar" and nicotine yields of commercial cigarettes in developed countries have significantly declined. However, the risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and for cancer of the lung has not decreased; adenocarcinoma incidence even continues to rise faster than the rate of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Undiminished risk of cigarette smokers for COPD and lung cancer is largely due to more intense smoking and deeper inhalation of the smoke of "low-yield" cigarettes and to significant changes in the smoke yields of certain lung carcinogens.

We have previously developed a microcomputer-assisted curve-fitting method for measuring the components of the mixed electrochemical signals recorded by differential normal pulse voltammetry in the living brain. It was initially used for resolution of the dopamine and dihydroxyphenylacetic acid components of the catechol signal (peak 2). This report shows how it can be applied to analysis of the indoleamine/uric acid (UA) components of the more complex peak 3.

In order to evaluate the correlation between immunohistochemical and morphometric data on the same histological sections, we have developed a flexible color image analyzer (Microcomputer-Assisted Picture Processing System type II, MAPPS-II), and established an effective method to analyze the immunostained colorectal neoplasms based on the color recognition theory of human visual system. Colorectal adenomas and adenocarcinomas were stained with a monoclonal antibody C 12, which recognizes abnormal H antigen, using Avidin-Biotin method and diaminobenzidine (DAB, brown dye). Nuclei were stained with Hematoxylin (blue dye).

A microcomputer-assisted curve-fitting procedure was developed for the quantitative estimation of the components of the mixed "catechol peak" recorded with differential normal pulse voltammetry (DNPV) at electrochemically pretreated carbon fiber microelectrodes in the living brain. The contribution of each of the relevant electroactive species is fitted by a normal probability function, the parameters of which are previously determined in vitro for each electrode and substance. The voltammogram is thus modeled as a mixture of normal curves corresponding to the individual oxidizable substances plus a low order polynomial approximating the baseline.
