Evolutionary dynamics of mitochondrial genomes and intracellular transfers among diploid and allopolyploid cotton species.

BMC Biol

January 2025

Shenzhen Branch, Guangdong Laboratory of Lingnan Modern Agriculture, Key Laboratory of Synthetic Biology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shenzhen, 518120, China.

Background: Plant mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) exhibit extensive structural variation yet extremely low nucleotide mutation rates, phenomena that remain only partially understood. The genus Gossypium, a globally important source of cotton, offers a wealth of long-read sequencing resources to explore mitogenome and plastome variation and dynamics accompanying the evolutionary divergence of its approximately 50 diploid and allopolyploid species.

Results: Here, we assembled 19 mitogenomes from Gossypium species, representing all genome groups (diploids A through G, K, and the allopolyploids AD) based on a uniformly applied strategy.

Background: This study investigates the role and efficacy of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation therapy during the recovery phase of patients with traumatic spinal cord injury. Patients hospitalized in the acupuncture department of our center between December 1, 2019, and December 1, 2021, were enrolled.

Methods: Participants were divided into an observation group (acupuncture and rehabilitation therapy) and a control group (rehabilitation therapy alone) based on their treatment sequence.

Aims: To date, bariatric surgery (BS) is the most effective long-term treatment for obesity, but weight regain (WR) is common. The very low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) is effective for weight loss and may influence gut microbiota (GM) composition, but it has been scarcely evaluated in post-bariatric patients. This study compared the efficacy and safety of a VLCKD in patients with WR post-bariatric surgery (BS+) and in bariatric surgery-naïve patients (BS-).

The paper introduces a method for predicting damage intensity in masonry residential buildings situated in mining areas, focusing on the impact of large-scale continuous ground deformation. The research utilizes in situ data collected in a database, encompassing structural and material features, as well as information on maintenance quality and building durability. In addition to this information, the database collected data on the intensity of continuous deformation of the mining area at the location of the building, as well as the range and intensity of damage identified in buildings.
