Recurrent strokes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement in an elderly patient with severe bicuspid aortic valve stenosis: a case report.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

December 2024

Department of Cardiology, Beijing Hospital, National Center of Gerontology, Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing, 100730, China.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has evolved from a novel technology to an established therapy for high-risk patients with symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis (AS). Recently, its use has also been extended to low-risk patients, resulting in its increasing utilization in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). But as a serious post-TAVR complication, ischemic stroke was associated with a nearly 6-fold increased 30-day mortality.

Blood flow dynamics in the ascending aorta of patients with bicuspid aortic valve before and after transcatheter aortic valve replacement: a computational fluid dynamics study.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

December 2024

Department of Structural Heart Disease, National Center for Cardiovascular Disease, China & Fuwai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Background: Abnormal blood flow patterns are known to contribute to the ascending aortic dilation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). The present study elucidated the blood flow characteristics in the dilated ascending aorta before and after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.

Methods: We performed CFD analysis in three BAV patients with ascending aortic dilation (maximum diameter ≥ 45 mm) who underwent TAVR.

Background: Accurate assessment of aortic root is crucial for the preprocedural planning of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). A variety software is emerging for the semiautomated or automated measurements during TAVR planning. This study evaluated a new deep-learning (DL) tool based on cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for fully automatic assessment of aortic root.

Aortic Dissection Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

Semin Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

December 2024

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Division of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery, Columbia University. 177 Ft. Washington Avenue, New York, NY 10032, USA. Electronic address:

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) continues to grow in popularity and has become the preferred mechanism for the treatment of aortic stenosis in most patients. Despite significant improvements in the safety of TAVR, complications remain inevitable. Aortic dissection, although rare, is a feared complication following TAVR.

Clinical outcomes of patients with bicuspid aortic valve undergoing a targeted transcatheter aortic valve replacement approach: the LIRA Method.

Can J Cardiol

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is still burdened by a non-negligible rate of stroke and permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI). These suboptimal results, possibly related to the unique BAV anatomy, might suggest the use of a different sizing method in this setting. The aim of our study is to evaluate whether the application of the supra-annular LIRA method might improve clinical outcomes in this population.
