Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there was a marked increase in alcohol consumption. COVID-19 superimposed on underlying liver disease notably worsens the outcome of many forms of liver injury. The goal of a current pilot study was to test the dual exposure of alcohol and COVID-19 infection in an experimental animal model of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD).

SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the global COVID-19 pandemic, has undergone significant genetic changes, leading to various variants impacting transmissibility, severity, and vaccine efficacy. The methodology involved evaluating SARS-CoV-2 variants designated by WHO as Variants of Interest (VOIs) and Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs). Several noteworthy mutations including G446S, K417N, T478K, E484A, N501Y, and Y505H exhibit a strong pattern of convergent evolution across all these variants, particularly at antigenic sites within the spike protein.

Introduction: From 2020, with advent of COVID-19 pandemic, Tripura has experienced SARS-CoV-2 viral evolution in accordance with other parts of India. Since January 2022, the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 virus became the predominant lineage circulating in India and neighboring countries. This study characterizes the viral genome of the omicron variant circulating in the state since its inception to June, 2023.

Since the first reported case of COVID-19 in December 2019, several SARS-CoV-2 variants have evolved, and some of them have shown higher transmissibility, becoming the prevalent strains. Genomic epidemiological investigations into strains from different time points, including the early stages of the pandemic, are very crucial for understanding the evolution and transmission patterns. Using whole-genome sequences, our study describes the early landscape of SARS-CoV-2 variants in central India retrospectively (including the first known occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 in Madhya Pradesh).
