Article Synopsis
  • Mollusks, the second most diverse animal phylum, have unclear responses to endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), which can cause reproductive issues and population declines.
  • In the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, exposure to EDCs like 17α-ethinylestradiol and ketoconazole was shown to change sex and disrupt gonadal development.
  • A newly developed non-destructive qPCR assay allows researchers to identify the sex of mussels before experiments, aiding in monitoring and understanding the effects of EDCs on mollusk endocrinology.

Ketoconazole blocks progesterone production without affecting other parameters of cumulus-oocyte complex maturation.

Reprod Toxicol

Division of Farm Animal Health, Department Population Health Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, Utrecht, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Ketoconazole (KTZ) is widely used as a fungicide, but it is also known to target steroid hormone formation which may affect female reproductive health. Our study aims to investigate the effects of KTZ on in vitro matured bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs), as a model for female reproductive toxicity. Cumulus cells of in vitro maturing COCs produce progesterone and pregnenolone, but exposure to 10 M KTZ effectively blocked the synthesis of these hormones.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 32-year-old woman experienced itchy, painful skin lesions in the vulva and on her shins for 2 months, initially treated with corticosteroids and vancomycin without success.
  • - Biopsies revealed Majocchi's granuloma, an infection caused by fungal infiltration in hair follicles, confirmed through growth in tissue culture and further analysis; the patient had recently adopted a guinea pig with similar skin issues.
  • - After being prescribed terbinafine and ketoconazole cream, she showed significant improvement, and after 6 months of treatment, her skin remained clear for 4 months after stopping antifungals; her guinea pig was also treated successfully by a veterinarian.

Background: The concern about the global spread of resistant malaria has made the researchers not focus only on the treatment of established infections but relatively more on the prevention of the disease.

Objective: This study evaluates the chemopreventive activity of ketoconazole in a murine malarial model.

Method: Five out of seven groups of mice were pretreated for five days with proguanil (PRG), sulfadoxine/ pyrimethamine (SP), 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg body weight (b.

Quantitative analysis of ovarian surface photographs as a tool for assessment of chemical effects on folliculogenesis and ovulation in rats.

Reprod Toxicol

August 2023

Department of Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, SE-14186 Stockholm, Sweden; Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Huddinge, SE-14186 Stockholm, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • Female reproductive toxicity assessments typically rely on labor-intensive histological evaluation of ovaries using H&E staining, making them time-consuming and costly.
  • The study introduces a new method called 'surface photo counting' (SPC) that quantifies antral follicles (AF) and corpora lutea (CL) through ovarian surface photographs as a more efficient alternative.
  • Validation showed that SPC effectively correlates with traditional histology in detecting ovarian toxicity from endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), presenting a faster and cheaper option for prioritizing chemical exposure assessments.
