Bone morphogenetic protein signaling: the pathway and its regulation.

Genetics

February 2024

Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry, Carney Institute for Brain Science, Brown University, Providence, RI 02912, USA.

In the mid-1960s, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) were first identified in the extracts of bone to have the remarkable ability to induce heterotopic bone. When the Drosophila gene decapentaplegic (dpp) was first identified to share sequence similarity with mammalian BMP2/BMP4 in the late-1980s, it became clear that secreted BMP ligands can mediate processes other than bone formation. Following this discovery, collaborative efforts between Drosophila geneticists and mammalian biochemists made use of the strengths of their respective model systems to identify BMP signaling components and delineate the pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • ChatGPT is an AI-driven chat robot developed by OpenAI that can handle various tasks like writing, coding, and translation.
  • It has been examined for academic writing assistance, but its accuracy, especially on complex topics, can be questionable and requires verification.
  • The text also discusses a specific medical case of a suprasellar ectopic pituitary neuroendocrine tumor in a 53-year-old woman, detailing symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and the tumor's typical characteristics.

Background: Traditionally, nondisplaced geriatric femoral neck fractures (FNFs) have undergone operative fixation, while displaced geriatric FNFs have undergone hip arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences between outcomes in patients with nondisplaced (Garden I and II) fractures and displaced (Garden III and IV) fractures that were treated with arthroplasty.

Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients who had a minimum of 1 year follow-up from nine academic medical centers who underwent arthroplasty for FNFs between 2010 and 2020.

The tricuspid valve is a complex structure with normal function dependent on the leaflet morphology, right atrial and annular dynamics, and right ventricular and chordal support. Thus, the pathophysiology of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is equally complex and current medical and surgical management options are limited. Transcatheter devices are currently being investigated as possible treatment options with lower morbidity and mortality than open surgical procedures.

Are There Identifiable Risk Factors Associated With Heterotopic Ossification of the Temporomandibular Joint?

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

August 2022

Visiting Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Professor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA. Electronic address:

Purpose: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is defined as bone where it does not belong and as the abnormal presence of calcifications within soft tissues or joints. The purpose of this study was to answer the following clinical question: Are there identifiable risk factors associated with HO in and around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)?

Methods: We designed a retrospective review of patients seen at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, between January 1985 and December 2019 and diagnosed with HO involving the TMJ. Variables studied included demographic factors, medical history including hereditary conditions, and specific TMJ history including past interventions.
