Polarity often refers to the charge carrier type of a semiconductor or the charging state of a functional group, generally dominating their functionality and performance. Herein we uncover a spontaneous and stochastic polarity-flipping phenomenon in monolayer WSe, which randomly switches between the -type and -type states and is essentially triggered by fluctuating carrier flows from or to the adjacent WS monolayer. We have traced such fluctuating carrier flows by interfacial photocurrent measurements in a zero-bias two-terminal device. Such polarity flipping results in switching between the negative and positive correlations between the emission intensities of WS and WSe in the heterobilayer, which is further well-controlled by the electrostatic gate-tuning experiments in a capacitor-structure device. Our work not only demonstrates giant and intermittent carrier flows through long-range coupling in 2D heterostructures and a consequent spontaneous polarity flipping phenomenon but also provides a two-emitter system with a switchable correlation sign that could project future applications in optical logic devices.

Article Synopsis
  • - When nanoparticles travel in the bloodstream, they encounter plasma proteins, forming a layer called the "protein corona," which affects their ability to circulate, target, and cause toxicity in the body.
  • - This review emphasizes understanding the formation of the protein corona at an atomic level, utilizing advanced computer simulations to explore factors like protein concentration, particle characteristics, and interactions with membranes.
  • - Simulation results not only match experimental data but also offer insights that could help design nanomedicines for targeted drug delivery by controlling the protein corona's formation.

Article Synopsis
  • Molybdenum disulfide (MoS) is a 2D semiconductor with a range of applications, and using liquid molybdenum precursors has enhanced its production at a large scale.
  • The study investigates how different nitrogen carrier gas flow rates (150 to 300 sccm) affect the growth and properties of MoS films on silicon substrates.
  • Findings indicate a relationship between the carrier gas flow, the lateral size and shape of MoS flakes, and sulfur availability, leading to improved synthesis of uniform single-layer flakes up to 100 µm.

Sediment slurries, characterized by their high concentrations of fine-grained cohesive sediment, are prevalent in various aquatic environments, including fluid mud, sediment gravity flows, and dredging slurries. Abundant microplastics have been detected in sediment slurries, which indicates that these slurries function as carriers for the transport of microplastics. However, there is a dearth of understanding on how sediment slurries transport microplastics.

Front-Tracking and Gelation in Sessile Droplet Suspensions: What Can They Tell Us about Human Blood?

Recently developed imaging techniques have been used to examine the redistribution of human red blood cells and comparator particles dispersed in carrier fluids within evaporating droplets. We demonstrate that progressive gelation initiates along an annular front, isolating a central pool that briefly remains open to particulate advection before gelation completes across the droplet center. Transition to an elastic solid is evidenced by cracking initiating proximal to front locations.

Food preservation and fortification pose significant challenges in the fruit and dairy sectors, particularly in developing regions with limited infrastructure and rising production volumes. Cashew apples, rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C and polyphenolic compounds, often go to waste due to their high perishability. In Goa, India, these discarded fruits are used to produce "Feni," an alcoholic beverage, but broader utilization strategies are still needed.
