Objectives: Pleth variability index (PVI) has been studied mostly in mechanically ventilated patients, and the role of PVI in predicting volume status and volume changes among spontaneously breathing patients is not clear in the literature. We hypothesized that hemodialysis (HD) can be a valid model for a simulation that can be evaluated the correlation of PVI with fluid changes in various volume states. The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of PVI for assessing volume changes in HD patients who are breathing spontaneously.
Methods: This prospective, observational study included patients aged 18 years or older who had end-stage renal failure and presented for routine HD between December 2019 and January 2020. PVI values were measured before and after HD session. Changes in PVI levels were compared according to the amount of ultrafiltration.
Results: A total of sixty patients were included. Mean PVI level before HD (20.7% ± 5%) showed a statistically significant increase to 27.7% ± 6% after HD session ( < 0.001). According to the amount of fluid removed during HD, the changes in PVI were statistically significant ( = 0.015). There was a strong correlation between ΔPVI and ultrafiltrated volume ( = 0.744, < 0.001).
Conclusion: The fluid removed by HD caused increase in PVI, and the increase was strongly correlated with the amount of volume change. Bedside monitoring of PVI may provide the clinicians with useful information for monitoring the volume status in critically ill patients with spontaneous breathing.

Texture analysis generates image parameters from F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT). Although some parameters correlate with tumor biology and clinical attributes, their types and implications can be complex. To overcome this limitation, pseudotime analysis was applied to texture parameters to estimate changes in individual sample characteristics, and the prognostic significance of the estimated pseudotime of primary tumors was evaluated.

Collapsible loess soils, known for their significant volume reduction upon the wetting, pose critical challenges in the geotechnical engineering. The estimation of the wetting-induced settlement is crucial for the foundation design and the determination of the negative skin friction on the pile. In this paper, a new method is proposed to estimate the wetting induced collapse from the wetting soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and the index properties of the loess soils.

Lycium barbarum is an important economic crop in the arid region of Northwest China, and the regulation of irrigation and fertilisation is an important way to improve the quality and yield of Lycium barbarum. To explore the effects of water-fertiliser coupling on photosynthesis, quality and yield of Lycium barbarum under irrigation methods based on predicted crop evapotranspiration (ET), ET was calculated via reference evapotranspiration (ET) predicted on the basis of public weather forecasts, and the irrigation water volume was determined as a proportion of this ET. A field experiment was conducted via a completely randomised experimental design with five irrigation water volumes (W0 (100% ET), W1 (90% ET), W2 (80% ET), W3 (70% ET) and W4 (65% ET)) and three fertiliser application rates (high fertiliser (FH), medium fertiliser (FM) and low fertiliser (FL)).

Tin sulphide compounds (SnS, x = 1, 2) are potential anode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to their characteristic layered structure, high theoretical capacity, non-toxicity and low production cost. However, they suffer from significant volume changes resulting in poor performance of such anodes. In this work incorporation of SnS into the carbon structure was expected to overcome these disadvantages.

Addressing the need to harmonize environment conservation and sustainable economic development within the Yellow River Basin (YRB) requires a profound comprehension of the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban ecosystem resilience. This study developed an index system utilizing the resistance-adaptability-recovery framework to measure these dynamics. By applying the advanced multi-attribute boundary area comparison method and a spatial autocorrelation model, we investigated the spatiotemporal variations and spatial correlation patterns of urban ecological resilience across the YRB.
