The occurrence of several disinfectant byproducts has been investigated in swimming pools. Until now, there are only a few studies on nitrosamine, particularly -nitrosodimethylamine in swimming pool water. This could be due to the lack of a suitable method that is sensitive enough for the measurement of -nitrosodimethylamine in pool waters. Other disinfectant byproducts formed in pool water widely documented are trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, halonitromethanes, and chloramines but inadequate information on -nitrosodimethylamine. This paper provides a review of the nitrogenous disinfectant byproduct in swimming pools and its health implications. Anthropogenic substances introduced by swimmers such as sweat, lotions, and urine contribute to the formation of -nitrosodimethylamine. The reaction of secondary amines such as dimethylamine with mono/dichloroamines produced dimethyl hydrazine and further undergo oxidation to form -nitrosodimethylamine. The reaction of chlorine and other disinfectants with these anthropogenic sources in swimming pools cause cancer and asthma in human tissues. Thus, the assessment of -nitrosodimethylamine in the swimming pool is less well documented. Therefore, the health consequences, mutagenic, and genotoxic potentials of -nitrosodimethylamine should be the focus of more research studies.

Results: 29 outbreaks were included in the review.

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a widespread unicellular eukaryote found in diverse environments, including tap water, soil, and swimming pools. It is responsible for severe infections, such as Acanthamoeba keratitis and granulomatous amebic encephalitis, particularly in individuals with immunocompromisation. The ability of protozoans to form dormant and persistent cysts complicates treatment, as current therapies are ineffective against cyst stages and suffer from poor specificity and side effects.

Swimming pools and jacuzzis can pose significant public health risks as potential sources of infections. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and concentration of microbiological indicators in recreational water facilities in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, focusing on their hygiene status before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Between January 2018 and December 2022, 1114 water samples were analyzed by the regional Water Hygiene Laboratory at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, using standardized ISO methods.

Case Presentation: We report a case of chlorotrichosis in a 16-year-old female who presented with a sudden and pronounced change in hair color after initiating regular swimming.

Disinfection of swimming pool water is critical to ensure the safety of the recreational activity for swimmers. However, swimming pools have a constant loading of organic matter from input water and anthropogenic contamination, leading to elevated levels of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Epidemiological studies have associated increased risks of adverse health effects with frequent exposure to DBPs in swimming pools.
