Background: From 2017 to 2020, the American Society of Hematology (ASH) collaborated with 12 hematology societies in Latin America to adapt the ASH guidelines on venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Objective: To describe the methods used to adapt the ASH guidelines on venous thromboembolism.

Methods: Each society nominated 1 individual to serve on the guideline panel. The work of the panel was facilitated by the 2 methodologists. The methods team selected 4 of the original VTE guidelines for a first round. To select the most relevant questions, a 2-step prioritization process was conducted through an on-line survey and then through in-person discussion. During an in-person meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 23 April through 26 April 2018, the panel developed recommendations using the ADOLOPMENT approach. Evidence about health effects from the original guidelines was reused, but important data about resource use, accessibility, feasibility, and impact in health equity were added.

Results: In the guideline accompanying this paper, Latin American panelists selected 17 questions from an original pool of 49. Of the 17 questions addressed, substantial changes were introduced for 5 recommendations, and remarks were added or modified for 12 recommendations.

Conclusions: By using the evidence from an international guideline, a significant amount of work and time were saved; by adding regional evidence, the final recommendations were tailored to the Latin American context. This experience offers an alternative to develop guidelines relevant to local contexts through a global collaboration.

Systematic characterization of faecal sludge from various sources for its use as a solid fuel.

Biomass Convers Biorefin

September 2023

Department of Water Supply, Sanitation and Environmental Engineering, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Westvest 7, 2611 AX Delft, the Netherlands.

Faecal sludge (FS) is not extensively evaluated for its potential as a solid fuel mainly due to the general conception of its "highly variable characteristics" in relation to the wide range of on-site sanitation systems. An extensive and systematic FS characterization was therefore conducted on twenty-four samples collected directly from pit latrines, ventilated improved pit latrines (VIPs) and urine-diverting dehydrating toilets (UDDTs) at two depths to understand the impact on properties relevant for combustion. The higher heating value (HHV) for these samples lies between 13 to 22 MJ/kg DM (dry matter).

This study was performed to reveal the metabolic effects and molecular mechanisms that govern the dietary incorporation of clenbuterol on growth performance, haemato-biochemical changes, histological alteration, and gene expression regulating glucose and lipid metabolism in normal and high-fat diets fed in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Six experimental diets were formulated, incorporating different concentrations of clenbuterol. The 1st three groups were supplemented with a diet comprising 6% fat, with clenbuterol of 0, 5, and 10 g/kg diet was designated as F6 clenb0, F6clenb5, and F6clenb10, respectively.

Biosynthetic mesh has become more popular for immediate breast cancer implant-based reconstruction as an alternative to acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for soft tissue support. This meta-analysis investigates the various biosynthetic options available as well as complications and outcomes. PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase were systematically reviewed for studies investigating the following types of mesh, TIGR, Vicryl, PDO, TiLOOP, Durasorb, and Galaflex, and their associated outcomes.

The study aimed to explore the potential use of coal-fired power plant bottom ashes in Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation using spent coffee grounds. The study analyzed five compositions of growth substrate for mushrooms: pure coffee grounds (I) as a control sample; coffee grounds substrate with the addition of 1% (II); 5% (III); 10% (IV) bottom ash; and bottom ash alone (V). The study revealed that compared to the control sample (I), the addition of 1% bottom ash (II) did not affect the time of mycelium growth but slowed fruiting body growth by 4 days.

Automatic adjustment of dental crowns using Laplacian mesh editing.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

December 2024

Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomedical Materials Science, Hannover Medical School, Carl-Neuberg-Str. 1, 30625, Hannover, Germany. Electronic address:

Currently, the restoration of missing teeth by means of dental implants is a common treatment method in dentistry. Ensuring optimal contact between teeth (occlusion) when designing the occlusal surface of an implant-supported crown is crucial for the patient. Although there are various occlusal concepts and guidelines for achieving optimised occlusion, adapting an occlusal surface is challenging.
