We disclose a synthetic route that providess an unprecedented library of salan ligands endowed with (N-H) backbones, previously limited to -methylated backbones. Efforts to identify a generic complexation protocol to yield the corresponding Cu(II)-salan complexes demonstrate the scope and limitations of this approach.

Spiro skeletons have emerged as a privileged class of chiral carriers across various research fields, including asymmetric catalysis and functional materials, due to their remarkable configurational rigidity. However, limited structural diversity of spiro frameworks significantly restricts the expansion of their applications. Here we present a new class of axially chiral spiro-bisindole frameworks and report their first enantioselective construction via a chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed intramolecular dehydrative cyclization reaction.

Herein, we have investigated the effect of microhydration on the secondary structure of a capped dipeptide Boc-DPro-Gly-NHBn-OMe (Boc = tert-butyloxycarbonyl, Bn = Benzyl), i.e., Pro-Gly (PG) with a single H2O molecule using gas-phase laser spectroscopy combined with quantum chemistry calculations.

Besides their structure, dynamics is pivotal for protein functions, particularly for intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) that do not fold into a fixed 3D structure. However, the detection of protein dynamics is difficult for IDPs and other disordered biomolecules. NMR spin relaxation rates are sensitive to the rapid rotations of chemical bonds, but their interpretation is arduous for IDPs or molecular assemblies with a complex dynamic landscape.

Experimental methods capable of selectively probing water at the DNA minor groove, major groove, and phosphate backbone are crucial for understanding how hydration influences DNA structure and function. Chiral-selective sum frequency generation spectroscopy (chiral SFG) is unique among vibrational spectroscopies because it can selectively probe water molecules that form chiral hydration structures around biomolecules. However, interpreting chiral SFG spectra is challenging since both water and the biomolecule can produce chiral SFG signals.
