Background: The self-expanding, supra-annular Evolut valve is an established platform for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). Evolut PRO introduced an outer sealing wrap to mitigate paravalvular leakage. We evaluated the 3-year clinical outcomes and valve performance of the Evolut PRO in standard clinical practice for severe aortic stenosis (AS) patients at intermediate or higher risk for surgery.

Mild Permissive Alkalosis Improves Outcomes in Porcine Negative Pressure Ventilation Ex-Situ Lung Perfusion.

Transplant Proc

December 2024

Division of Cardiac Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Alberta; Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Alberta Transplant Institute, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Ex-Situ Lung Perfusion (ESLP) employs a membrane deoxygenator and mixed (N/O/CO) or pure sweep gas (CO) to target venous blood gas composition with physiologic pCO and pH. Clinically, mild permissive alkalosis counteracts elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) to improve perfusion. Increased PVR and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) during ESLP mirrors rising pro-inflammatory cytokines.

NT-proBNP improves prediction of cardiorenal complications in type 2 diabetes: the Hong Kong Diabetes Biobank.

Diabetologia

November 2024

Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong, HKSAR, China.

Aims/hypothesis: N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a natriuretic peptide that is strongly associated with congestive heart failure (CHF). The utility of NT-proBNP for prediction of cardiovascular events and renal endpoints, compared with clinical risk factors, has not been evaluated in detail. We hypothesise that NT-proBNP can improve risk stratification and prediction of cardiorenal events in type 2 diabetes, beyond that provided by clinical risk factors.

Aims: The SURMOUNT-1 trial investigated effects of tirzepatide, a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, on body weight in participants with obesity or overweight. This analysis evaluated changes in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) assessing physical function, psychosocial well-being, and overall health aspects of participants' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in SURMOUNT-1.

Methods: PRO instruments included the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life-Lite Clinical Trials version (IWQOL-Lite-CT), Short Form Survey-36 version 2 (SF-36v2) and EQ-5D-5L.
