Article Abstract

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are bone-binding molecules that provide targeting capabilities to bone cancer cells when conjugated with drug-carrying polymers. This work reports the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of polyethyleneimine-BP-cyclodextrin (PEI-BP-CD) ternary conjugates with supramolecular capabilities for the loading of antineoplastic drugs. A straightforward, modular, and versatile strategy based on the click aza-Michael addition reaction of vinyl sulfones (VSs) allows the grafting of BPs targeting ligands and βCD carrier appendages to the PEI polymeric scaffold. The evaluation (cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, internalization routes, and subcellular distribution) for the ternary conjugates and their doxorubicin inclusion complexes in different bone-related cancer cell lines (MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts, MG-63 sarcoma cells, and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells) confirmed specificity, mitochondrial targeting, and overall capability to mediate a targeted drug transport to those cells. The evaluation using xenografts of MG-63 and MDA-MB-231 cells on mice also confirmed the targeting of the conjugates.

Due to high binding energy and extremely short diffusion distance of Frenkel excitons in common organic semiconductors at early stage, mechanism of interface charge transfer-mediated free carrier generation has dominated the development of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). However, considering the advancements in materials and device performance, it is necessary to reexamine the photoelectric conversion in current-stage efficient OSCs. Here, we propose that the conjugated materials with specific three-dimensional donor-acceptor conjugated packing potentially exhibit distinctive charge photogeneration mechanism, which spontaneously split Wannier-Mott excitons to free carriers in pure phases.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs), ricin, and many other biological toxins are called AB toxins possessing heterogeneous A and B subunits. We propose herein a quick and safe sensing approach to AB toxins based on their unique quaternary structures. The proposed approach utilizes IgG antibodies against their A-subunits in combination with those human cell-membrane glycolipids that act as the natural ligands of B-subunits.

In this study, the structure, functionality, physicochemical property, emulsion storage stability, and rheological properties of soybean meal hydrolysate-proanthocyanidin (SMH-PC) conjugates in ternary complex with glucan, sodium alginate, or soybean polysaccharides were investigated. Following complexing, the proteins unfolded and their disordered structures positively promoted the emulsifying properties of ternary complexes. The SMH-PC-glucan complex showed the best antioxidant activity and the highest emulsifying activity index (94.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising approach for treating glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) with minimal invasiveness and favorable outcomes. Conjugated polymers as photothermal agents offer stability, biocompatibility, and adjustable absorption capacity. However, existing polymers face limitations in achieving high photothermal conversion efficiency and strong absorbance in the near-infrared (NIR) region, posing a risk of damaging healthy tissues surrounding GBM during precise PTT.

The expansion of two-dimensional conjugated systems in nonfullerene electron acceptors (NFAs) has significantly advanced the molecular design and efficiency potential of organic solar cells (OSCs). This study introduces a novel class of NFAs featuring a benzimidazole core with varying degrees of peripheral fluorination, designated as YIS-4F, YIS-6F, and YIS-8F, respectively. Through systematic modulation of fluorine content, we observed that OSCs incorporating YIS-6F achieved the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.
