Equilibrium and dynamical properties of a two-dimensional polydisperse colloidal model system are characterized by means of molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We employed several methods to prepare quasi-equilibrated systems: in particular, by slow cooling and tempering with MD (method SC-MD), and by tempering with MC dynamics involving swaps of particle diameters (methods Sw-MD, Sw-MC). It is revealed that the Sw-methods are much more efficient for equilibration below the glass transition temperature T leading to denser and more rigid systems which show much slower self-diffusion and shear-stress relaxation than their counterparts prepared with the SC-MD method. The shear-stress relaxation modulus G(t) is obtained based on the classical stress-fluctuation relation. We demonstrate that the α-relaxation time τ obtained using a time-temperature superposition of G(t) shows a super-Arrhenius behavior with the VFT temperature T well below T. We also derive novel rigorous fluctuation relations providing isothermic and adiabatic compression relaxation moduli in the whole time range (including the short-time inertial regime) based on correlation data for thermostatted systems. It is also shown that: (i) the assumption of Gaussian statistics for stress fluctuations leads to accurate predictions of the variances of the fluctuation moduli for both shear (μ) and compression (η) at T⪆T. (ii) The long-time (quasi-static) isothermic and adiabatic moduli increase on cooling faster than the affine compression modulus η, and this leads to a monotonic temperature dependence of η which is qualitatively different from μ(T) showing a maximum near T.

Mechanical characteristics of spinal cord tissue by indentation.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

December 2024

Institute of Continuum Mechanics and Biomechanics, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Dr.-Mack-Straße 81, Fürth, 90762, Germany. Electronic address:

The mechanical properties of brain and spinal cord tissue have proven to be extremely complex and difficult to assess. Due to the heterogeneous and ultra-soft nature of the tissue, the available literature shows a large variance in mechanical parameters derived from experiments. In this study, we performed a series of indentation experiments to systematically investigate the mechanical properties of porcine spinal cord tissue in terms of their sensitivity to indentation tip diameter, loading rate, holding time, ambient temperature along with cyclic and oscillatory dynamic loading.

Rheology of Ring Copolymers in Dilute Solutions.

J Phys Chem B

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, University of Delhi, Delhi, Delhi 110007, India.

We investigate the rheology of ring copolymers theoretically within the framework of the optimized Rouse-Zimm theory in dilute solutions. The ring copolymer is composed of two type of monomers (A and B) of different sizes (A < B), which is represented by unequal-sized beads connected via harmonic springs with different spring constants. The hydrodynamic interactions (HI) between the monomers is modeled using the preaveraged HI tensor.

Purpose: To identify changes in morphological and mechanical properties in the volar ligament complex (VLC), dorsoradial ligaments (DRL), and posterior oblique ligaments (POL) in healthy and osteoarthritic female trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joints.

Methods: Twenty-four fresh-frozen female cadaveric TMCs were separated into (1) younger healthy/early-stage osteoarthritic, (2) elder healthy/early-stage osteoarthritic, and (3) advanced-stage osteoarthritic groups based on age and Eaton-Littler grading. Stress relaxation and load-to-failure testing were performed to characterize mechanical tensile properties.

This proof-of-concept study explores quantitative imaging of articular cartilage using photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) with a dual-contrast agent approach, comparing it to clinical dual-energy CT (DECT). The diffusion of cationic iodinated CA4 + and non-ionic gadolinium-based gadoteridol contrast agents into ex vivo bovine medial tibial plateau cartilage was tracked over 72 h. Continuous maps of the contrast agents' diffusion were created, and correlations with biomechanical indentation parameters (equilibrium and instantaneous moduli, and relaxation time constants) were examined at 28 specific locations.

Molecular Model for Linear Viscoelastic Properties of Entangled Polymer Networks.

Macromolecules

November 2024

Department of Materials, ETH Zürich, CH-8093 Zürich, Switzerland.

A molecular Kuhn-scale model is presented for the stress relaxation dynamics of entangled polymer networks. The governing equation of the model is given by the general form of the linearized Langevin equation. Based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the stress relaxation modulus is derived using the normal mode representation.
