Background: Pericardial adipose tissue (PAT), a visceral fat depot directly located to the heart, is associated with atherosclerotic and inflammatory processes. The extent of PAT is related to the prevalence of coronary heart disease and might be used for cardiovascular risk prediction. This study aimed to determine the effect of smoking on the extent of PAT.

Methods: We retrospectively examined 1217 asymptomatic patients (490 females, age 58.3 ± 8.3 years, smoker = 573, non-smoker = 644) with a multislice CT scanner and determined the PAT volume. Coronary risk factors were determined at inclusion, and a multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of smoking on PAT independent from accompanying risk factors.

Results: The mean PAT volume was 215 ± 107 mL in all patients. The PAT volume in smokers was significantly higher compared to PAT volume in non-smokers (231 ± 104 mL vs. 201 ± 99 mL, = 0.03). Patients without cardiovascular risk factors showed a significantly lower PAT volume (153 ± 155 mL, < 0.05) compared to patients with more than 1 risk factor. Odds ratio was 2.92 [2.31, 3.61; < 0.001] for elevated PAT in smokers.

Conclusion: PAT as an individual marker of atherosclerotic activity and inflammatory burden was elevated in smokers. The finding was independent from metabolic risk factors and might therefore illustrate the increased inflammatory activity in smokers in comparison to non-smokers.

Introduction: Donor human milk (DHM) is the first alternative if mother's own milk is unavailable or contraindicated. Much DHM research has focused on its nutritional, immunological and biochemical composition in response to various maternal variables, standard human milk banking procedures and storage protocols. The current systematic review protocol, however, aims to systematically gather and analyse existing data pertaining to the impact of these aforementioned factors on the clinical, health-related and developmental outcomes observed in infants fed with DHM.

Biomedical prospects and challenges of metal dichalcogenides nanomaterials.

Prog Biomed Eng (Bristol)

August 2024

CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, Dr K.S. Krishnan Road, New Delhi 110012, India.

The biomedical applications of metal dichalcogenides (MDCs) nanomaterials (NMs) are an emerging discipline because of their unique attributes like high surface-to-volume ratio, defect sites, superb catalytic performance, and excitation-dependent emission, which is helpful in bio-imaging and cancer cell killing. Due to the compatibility of sensing material with cells and tissues, MoS, WS, and SnSNMs have piqued the interest of researchers in various biomedical applications like photothermal therapy used in killing cancer cells, drug delivery, photoacoustic tomography (PAT) used in bio-imaging, nucleic acid or gene delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing, etc. Furthermore, these NMs' functionalization and defect engineering can enhance therapeutic efficacy, biocompatibility, high drug transport efficiency, adjustable drug release, dispersibility, and biodegradability.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate IMRT and 3D-CRT in the therapy of brain tumor (BT) in relation to dose-volume histograms (DVHs) parameters, such as Heterogeneity Index (HI), Conformity index (CI), Equivalent Uniform Dose (EUD), and mean dose (Dmean) outcomes, including the program for the tumors of the brain and estimate whether a favored procedure can be found through the features of the pretreatment.

Method: A search of the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase datasets from their beginnings from January 2006 to September 2022 was conducted. The authors separately selected and evaluated studies for qualifying criteria and bias risk.

A dosimetric and robustness analysis of proton arc therapy with early energy layer and spot assignment for lung cancer versus conventional intensity modulated proton therapy.

Background And Purpose: Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) faces challenges in lung cancer treatment, like maintaining plan robustness for moving tumors against setup, range errors, and interplay effects. Proton Arc Therapy (PAT) is an alternative to maintain target coverage, potentially improving organ at risk (OAR) sparing, reducing beam delivery time (BDT), and enhancing patient experience. We aim to perform a systematic plan comparison study between IMPT and energy layer (EL) and spot assignment algorithm - Proton Arc Therapy (ELSA-PAT) to assess its potential for lung cancer treatment.

The Effect of Stretching Exercises Applied to Caregivers of Children with Development Disabilities on Musculoskeletal Muscle Mobility and Respiratory Function.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

October 2024

Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Health Sciences, Yalova University, Yalova 77100, Turkey.

We aimed to investigate the effect of stretching exercises applied to the hamstring, one of the posterior muscle chains, on musculoskeletal flexibility, chest mobility, and respiratory function. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and static stretching exercises were applied to 30 healthcare personnel caring for children with developmental delays using a crossover randomized study design. Posterior muscle chain mobility was assessed using the popliteal angle test (PAT) for the hamstring muscle, the mobility of the lumbar muscles was assessed using the Schober test (ST), and the mobility of the posterior chain muscles as a whole was assessed using the finger-to-floor distance test.
