In this study, we examined aqueous extracts of the edible mushrooms (oyster mushroom) and (shiitake mushroom). Proteome analysis was conducted using LC-Triple TOF-MS and showed the expression of 753 proteins by , and 432 proteins by . Bioactive peptides: Rab GDP dissociation inhibitor, superoxide dismutase, thioredoxin reductase, serine proteinase and lectin, were identified in both mushrooms. The extracts also included promising bioactive compounds including phenolics, flavonoids, vitamins and amino acids. The extracts showed promising antiviral activities, with a selectivity index (SI) of 4.5 for against adenovirus (Ad7), and a slight activity for against herpes simplex-II (HSV-2). The extracts were not cytotoxic to normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). On the contrary, they showed moderate cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines. Additionally, antioxidant activity was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical cation scavenging and ORAC assays. The two extracts showed potential antioxidant activities, with the maximum activity seen for (IC50 µg/mL) = 39.46 ± 1.27 for DPPH; 11.22 ± 1.81 for ABTS; and 21.40 ± 2.20 for ORAC assays. This study encourages the use of these mushrooms in medicine in the light of their low cytotoxicity on normal PBMCs vis à vis their antiviral, antitumor and antioxidant capabilities.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the leading chronic liver disease worldwide, with alarming prevalence reaching epidemic proportions.

Aims And Methods: The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive review of the latest blood proteomics studies on MASLD and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), with emphasis on fibrosis. Furthermore, our objective is to conduct an analysis of protein pathways and interactions by integrating proteomics data using functional enrichment analysis of the deregulated proteins.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, characterized by an impaired epidermal barrier and immunological alterations. The activity of the cytoprotective NRF2 transcription factor is reduced in the epidermis of AD patients. To determine the functional relevance of this deficiency, we used mice lacking fibroblast growth factor receptors 1 and 2 in keratinocytes (K5-R1/R2 mice), which exhibit several AD-like symptoms.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide due to its poor prognosis. Despite significant advancements in the understanding of cancer development, improvements in diagnostic methods, and multimodal therapeutic regimens, the prognosis of lung cancer has still not improved. Therefore, it is reasonable to look for newer and alternative medicines for treatment.

HOXD13, a member of the homeobox gene family, plays a critical role in developmental processes and has been implicated in various malignancies, including pancreatic cancer and glioma. However, its role in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the potential of HOXD13 as a diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target for OSCC.

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

The thioredoxin (Trx) system is integral to redox regulation and participates in several physiological processes, including tumor growth, immune response, and stem cell differentiation. We have performed a comprehensive and holistic analysis of the Trx system in tumor immunity in this study. A study using the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) and Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC) databases was conducted to determine the expression and distribution of Trx system proteins.
