This study aimed to comprehensively analyze dietary fatty acids (FAs) to evaluate their association with FA compositions of maternal serum and breast milk and assess their effects on mothers and infants. Overall, 121 healthy lactating Chinese mothers at 30-50 days of postpartum were enrolled and instructed to complete a Food Frequency Questionnaire, together with venous blood and breast milk sample collections. Dietary FA patterns were derived by principal component analysis with varimax rotation. Serum and breast milk FA compositions were detected using capillary gas chromatography and presented as relative concentrations (weight percentage of total FAs, %). Daily energy intake, absolute intake of most nutrients, and percentage of energy intake provided by these nutrients significantly varied among the different dietary FA patterns. There were significant differences in serum polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels ( = 0.011); in monounsaturated fatty acid and PUFA proportions in breast milk with respect to four patterns ( = 0.002 and = 0.026, respectively); and in n-6 PUFA, n-3 PUFA, linoleic acid, γ-linolenic acid, α-linolenic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid levels in breast milk ( = 0.027, = 0.007, = 0.048, = 0.034, = 0.020, and = 0.002, respectively). Furthermore, maternal weight retention and length-for-age scores, weight-for-age scores and head circumference-for-age scores of infants with respect to the four patterns exhibited significant differences ( = 0.038, = 0.030, = 0.034, and <0.001, respectively). The results demonstrated the effect of dietary FA patterns on FA compositions of serum and breast milk, and patterns mainly characterized by LC-PUFA may have potentially beneficial effects on maternal postpartum recovery and infant growth.

The sense of smell begins to form during intrauterine life, and the sense of smell can be a marking tool for a newborn baby, so that the baby can recognize both his mother and his immediate environment and develop his behaviour accordingly. This is necessary not only for feeding babies but also for them to feel safe and peaceful in their new environment.

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is defined as feeding infants only breast milk of the mother or a wet nurse for the first six months, without additional food or liquids except the oral rehydration solution or drops/syrups of vitamins, minerals or medicines. The working status of women in developed countries adversely affects the EBF rates, which calls for an assessment in rapidly developing countries like India. Therefore, the primary aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence of EBF using the data from the National Family Health Surveys (NFHS 3, 4, 5) conducted between 2005 and 06, 2015-16 and 2019-21 to estimate the likelihood EBF according to mothers' employment status.

Background: This study addresses the determination of educational intervention-based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)-effectiveness on continued breastfeeding among Iranian mothers attending health centers, considering low researchers' attention to the continued breastfeeding index despite its important impact on children's health.
Methods: The present study was conducted among 230 mothers with exclusively breastfed infant (115 in the intervention group and 115 in the control group). Sampling starts with randomly selecting 12 health centers among all health centers in Karaj, Alborz province, and allocating them randomly into two equal groups of intervention and control.

Objective: Breastfeeding is associated with improved health outcomes in infancy and throughout adulthood as breast milk encompasses diverse immune-active factors that affect the ontogeny of the immune system in breastfed (BF) infants. Nevertheless, the impact of infant feeding on the immune system is poorly understood, and a comprehensive understanding of immune system development in human infants is lacking. In this observational study, we addressed the effects of different infant feeding approaches on cell populations and parameters in the peripheral blood of infants to gain insight into the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system.
