Reactions of Pd strings supported by meso-Ph PCH P(Ph)CH P(Ph)CH PPh (meso-dpmppm) ligands, [Pd (meso-dpmppm) (L) ] (L=CH CN (1), XylNC (2)) with C resulted in the exclusive formation of unprecedented metal-chain-wired C bucky balls, [{Pd (meso-dpmppm) (L)} (C )] (L=CH CN (11), XylNC (12)), in which a C fullerene is trapped in the central Pd-Pd junction, as unambiguously established by spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic, and theoretical techniques. The similar reaction of Pd strings supported by rac-dpmppm, [Pd (rac-dpmppm) (CH CN) ] (3) also afforded a racemic mixture of [{Pd ((R*,R*)-dpmppm) (CH CN)} (C )] (13) without scrambling the Pd fragments with (R,R)- and (S,S)-dpmppm ligands. Consequently, those of enantiopure chiral Pd strings, [Pd ((R*,R*)-dpmppm) (CH CN) ] , certainly afforded chiral bucky balls of [{Pd ((R*,R*)-dpmppm) (CH CN)} (C )] (13 and 13 ), that exhibit mirror-image circular dichroism spectra. The reactions of 1 and 2 were also applied for trapping a C fullerene to give 2 : 1 adducts of [{Pd (meso-dpmppm) (L)} (C )] (L=CH CN (21), XylNC (22)). These results provide useful information for creating a platform to develop dimensionally and chirality controlled metal-carbon nanocomposite materials.

Bis-porphyrin cages have long been exploited to bind fullerenes selectively for various applications. The major consideration for an effective binding here had been the cavity size. Herein, we structurally demonstrate that a bis-Ni-porphyrin cavitand having even a smaller cavity can host a larger fullerene by a breathing and ruffling mechanism.

Raman spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique in material science. It is a non-destructive tool with relatively simple instrumentation, and provides intrinsic qualitative information of analytes by probing their vibrational modes. In many cases, Raman enhancement is essential for detecting low-intensity signals in high-noise environments, spectrally unresolved features, and hidden modes.

Nanotechnology is used frequently in marketing skin care goods, and whereas the word sounds as if it belongs in robotics and science fiction, it is rapidly becoming common in medicine and skin care. As few people actually recognize what the technology, benefits, or possible implications of its use are, we determined to outline them. The type of nanotechnology that is most significant in cosmetics, skin care and health products is the use of nanoparticles (or Bucky balls as they are known in manufacturing), and a particular kind of these nanoparticles have been touted as the next generation of liposomes.

Highly Symmetric and Congruently Tiled Meshes for Shells and Domes.

We describe the generation of all possible shell and dome shapes that can be uniquely meshed (tiled) using a single type of mesh face (tile), and following a single meshing (tiling) rule that governs the mesh (tile) arrangement with maximal vertex, edge and face symmetries. Such tiling arrangements or congruently tiled meshed shapes, are frequently found in chemical forms (fullerenes or Bucky balls, crystals, quasi-crystals, virus nano shells or capsids), and synthetic shapes (cages, sports domes, modern architectural facades). Congruently tiled meshes are both aesthetic and complete, as they support maximal mesh symmetries with minimal complexity and possess simple generation rules.
