Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) has been revealed as a valuable approach against viral infections because of the fast therapeutic effect and low possibility of resistance development. The photodynamic inhibition of the infectivity of human herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) strain Victoria at different stages of its reproduction was studied. PDI activity was determined on extracellular virions, on the stage of their adsorption to the Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cell line and inhibition of the viral replication stage by application of two tetra-methylpyridiloxy substituted gallium and zinc phthalocyanines (ZnPcMe and GaPcMe) upon 660 nm light exposure with a light-emitting diode (LED 660 nm).

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers tested a new medicine called Pc 4 to see if it can help treat certain throat problems by injecting it directly into mouth and throat tissue in rabbits.
  • The rabbits had no major reactions or problems after getting the injections, which is a good sign.
  • The study showed that injecting Pc 4 into the tissues seemed safe, with only slight signs of irritation that weren't serious.

Article Synopsis
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that uses light and a special drug called a photosensitiser to target diseases like prostate cancer, focusing on selective uptake by diseased tissues.* -
  • This study introduces two silicon(IV) phthalocyanine compounds, SiPc-PQ(PSMAi) and SiPc-OSi(PSMAi), which are designed to enhance PDT effectiveness; they differ in their chemical link connecting the PSMA inhibitor to the silicon atom.* -
  • The findings show that SiPc-PQ(PSMAi) has superior properties in terms of oxygen generation, fluorescence, stability, and specific toxicity towards prostate cancer cells with PSMA, making it a promising

Recently, gold nanoparticles (Au Nps) have gained tremendous attention for its unique properties as a safe nanocarrier for delivering drugs that are used in different disease diagnoses. Although silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been generally applied due to their strong antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, their toxicity is a subject of sustained debate, thus requiring further studies. The present study aims to evaluate the potential protective effect of gold nanoparticles and phthalocyanine-gold nanoconjugates (Pc-Au NCs) against the hepatorenal toxicity of silver nanoparticles in male rats.

Article Synopsis
  • This study shows that sono-photodynamic therapy can effectively enhance singlet oxygen generation with specially developed silicon phthalocyanines.
  • The singlet oxygen quantum yields were measured, showing improved results in sono-photochemical studies compared to regular photochemical studies.
  • In tests on the PC3 prostate cancer cell line, the synthesized phthalocyanines were found to significantly reduce cell viability, suggesting their potential as treatment options for prostate cancer.
