Can a neutral ligand bond to a metal center of a square pyramidal oxohalido anion at the available sixth octahedral position? Crystal structures of some compounds indeed suggest that ligands, such as THF, pyridine, HO, NH, and CHCN, can interact with the central metal atom, because they are oriented with their heteroatom toward the metal center with distances being within the bonding range. However, this assumption that is based on chemical intuition is wrong. In-depth analysis of interactions between ligands and oxohalido anions (e.g., VOX, NbOCl) reveals that the bonding of a neutral ligand is almost entirely due to electrostatic interactions between the H atoms of a ligand and halido atoms of an anion. Furthermore, ab initio calculations indicate that the ligand-VOF interactions represent only about one-quarter of the total binding of the ligand within the crystal structure, whereas the remaining binding is due to crystal packing effects. The current study therefore shows that relying solely on the structural aspects of solved crystal structures, such as ligand orientation and bond distances, can lead to the wrong interpretation of the chemical bonding.

Tannic acid (TA) has attracted the attention of researchers as a promising organic ligand capable of forming metal-organic coordination networks with various metal ions at interfaces to impact surface properties. In this study, we innovatively reported a self-assembly method for surface decoration by depositing TA/Fe coatings on the surface of desalted duck egg white nanoparticles (DEWN), further studying the oil/water interfacial properties of the modified particles. The results showed that the ratio and concentration of TA to Fe could modulate interfacial properties.

Background: Irresponsible and wholesale use of antimicrobial agents is the principal cause of the emergence of strains of resistant microorganisms to traditional drugs. Oligoventin is a neutral peptide isolated from spider eggs of Phoneutria nigriventer, with antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and yeast organisms. However, the molecular target and pathways of antimicrobial activity are still unknown.

Bacillus cereus sphingomyelinase C (B. cereus SMase), which plays a crucial role in bacterial virulence, has emerged as a new therapeutic target for treating opportunistic infections caused by this pathogen. It also shares catalytic domain similarity with human neutral sphingomyelinase 2 (nSMase2), which is implicated in Alzheimer's disease.

The native extracellular matrix is continuously remodeled to form complex interconnected network structures that reversibly regulate stem cell behaviors. Both regulation and understanding of its intricate dynamicity can help to modulate numerous cell behaviors. However, neither of these has yet been achieved due to the lack of designing and modeling such complex structures with dynamic controllability.

Zinc ferrite (ZnFeO, ZFO) has gained attention as a candidate material for photoelectrochemical water oxidation. However, champion devices have achieved photocurrents far below that predicted by its bandgap energy. Herein, strong optical interference is employed in compact ultrathin film (8-14 nm) Ti-doped ZFO films deposited on specular back reflectors to boost photoanode performance through enhanced light trapping, resulting in a roughly fourfold improvement in absorption as compared to films deposited on transparent substrates.
