In this work, we reported a facile reduction approach for fabrication of water-soluble and ultrabright Cu nanoclusters with core-shell structure. A certain amount of reducing agent as NaBHwas introduced into the polyethyleneimine-stabilized Cu nanoclusters (CuNCs@PEI) system, which exhibited 4-fold fluorescence enhancement along with a blue shift of the emission peak. The variations of morphology, valence states and functional groups demonstrated that a Cu shell was formed surround CuNCs (defined as CuNCs-Cu@PEI), attributable to metal complex (PEI-Cuand PEI-Cu) reduction. The effect of core-shell morphology on luminous and electron relaxation mechanism of CuNCs-Cu@PEI was investigated via temperature-dependent steady and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The CuNCs-Cu@PEI with a high fluorescence quantum yields of 22.59% were able to homogeneously disperse in aqueous phase, indicating their potential applications in biological labeling, sensing and inimaging. Finally, the CuNCs-Cu@PEI was employed as a fluorescence probe to determine 4-nitrophenol, of which the detection limit was much lower than initial CuNCs@PEI.

Herein, a water-soluble, ultrabright, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent, mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs)-peptide bioconjugate is designed with dual targeting capabilities. Cancer cell surface overexpressed αβ integrin targeting two RGDS tetrapeptide residues is tethered at the macrocycle of MIMs-peptide bioconjugate via Cu(I)-catalyzed click chemistry on the Wang resin, and mitochondria targeting lipophilic cationic TPP functionality is conjugated at the axle dye. Living carcinoma cell selective active targeting, subsequently cell penetration, mitochondrial imaging, including the ultrastructure of cristae, and real-time tracking of malignant mitochondria by MIMs-peptide bioconjugate (RGDS)-Mito-MIMs-TPP are established by stimulated emission depletion (STED) super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.

Photoluminescence (PL) metal nanoclusters (NCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties, good biocompatibility, and broad application prospects. However, developing water-soluble PL metal NCs with a high quantum yield (QY) and high stability for visual drug delivery remains a great challenge. Herein, we have synthesized ultrabright l-Arg-ATT-Au/Ag NCs (Au/Ag NCs) with a PL QY as high as 73% and excellent photostability by heteroatom doping and surface rigidization in aqueous solution.

Integrating an NIR fluorescent probe with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agent to harvest complementary imaging information is challenging. Here, we have designed water-soluble, biocompatible, noncytotoxic, bright-NIR-emitting, sugar-functionalized, mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs)-capped superparamagnetic ultrasmall FeO NPs for targeted multimodal imaging. Dual-functional stoppers containing an unsymmetrical NIR squaraine dye interlocked within a macrocycle to construct multifunctional MIMs are developed with enhanced NIR fluorescence efficiency and durability.

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), as a novel fluorescent material, have been extensively explored and developed for bioimaging because of their attractive advantages such as ultrasmall size, low toxicity and exceptional two-photon excitation properties. However, it still remains a challenge to produce water-soluble, biocompatible and ultrabright AuNCs. Herein, we report on a novel one-pot synthesis of highly luminescent and biocompatible AuNCs by using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), a water-soluble polymer, to rigidify the primary stabilizing layer (shell) that is composed of 6-aza-2-thiothymine (ATT) ligands bound to the particle.
