The learning capabilities of a reservoir computer (RC) can be stifled due to symmetry in its design. Including quadratic terms in the training of a RC produces a "square readout matrix" that breaks the symmetry to quell the influence of "mirror-attractors," which are inverted copies of the RC's solutions in state space. In this paper, we prove analytically that certain symmetries in the training data forbid the square readout matrix to exist. These analytical results are explored numerically from the perspective of "multifunctionality," by training the RC to specifically reconstruct a coexistence of the Lorenz attractor and its mirror-attractor. We demonstrate that the square readout matrix emerges when the position of one attractor is slightly altered, even if there are overlapping regions between the attractors or if there is a second pair of attractors. We also find that at large spectral radius values of the RC's internal connections, the square readout matrix reappears prior to the RC crossing the edge of chaos.

Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) are both upregulated following traumatic injury. As IL-1RA blocks inflammatory signaling by IL-1β, overexpression of IL-1β relative to IL-1RA may drive inflammatory diseases. As such, determination of the relationship between IL-1β to IL-1RA expression levels in horses may provide insight into disease states or serve as a therapeutic readout of response to medical interventions.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is a powerful tool for investigating the relationship between brain function and cognitive processes as it allows for the functional organization of the brain to be captured without relying on a specific task or stimuli. In this paper, we present a novel modeling architecture called BrainRGIN for predicting intelligence (fluid, crystallized and total intelligence) using graph neural networks on rsfMRI derived static functional network connectivity matrices. Extending from the existing graph convolution networks, our approach incorporates a clustering-based embedding and graph isomorphism network in the graph convolutional layer to reflect the nature of the brain sub-network organization and efficient network expression, in combination with TopK pooling and attention-based readout functions.

Diazepam (DZP) is a muscle-relaxing, anxiety-relieving sedative drug; nonetheless, it is also an addictive drug that may be abused. This work reports on the development of a novel electrochemical nanosensor for diazepam using SiO-encapsulated-3-mercaptopropionic acid-capped AuZnCeSeS quantum dots (QDs) overcoated with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). Electrochemical, spectroscopic and electron microscopic characterization of the nanomaterial and modified electrode surface was carried out and is reported herein.

Article Synopsis
  • Reservoir computing (RC) is a neuromorphic approach that excels at processing spatiotemporal signals while cutting down training costs compared to traditional recurrent neural networks.
  • Our research presents a dual-memory RC system that uses different types of memristors to enhance memory capabilities, achieving 16 distinct states over short-term memory and incorporating long-term memory in the readout layer.
  • Testing this system on tasks like spoken digit recognition and time series prediction, we achieved 98.84% accuracy in recognizing spoken digits and a low error rate in time series forecasting, demonstrating the potential of memristor-based RC systems in handling complex temporal data.

Background: Nanozyme is a kind of biomimetic enzyme with unique properties and catalytic function of nanomaterials. Various nanozymes have been applied in the development of visual biosensors because of its excellent stability and availability. Nevertheless, the current applications of nanozymes primarily focus on colorimetric sensing based on color changes, which is susceptible to external factors interference including sample solution color and ambient light.
