The purification of stabilized oil/water emulsions is essential to meet the ever increasing demand for monitoring water in the environment, which has been addressed with superwetting carbon-based separation membranes. These include superhydrophilic carbon-based membranes whose progress in recent years and perspectives are reviewed in this paper. The membrane construction strategy is organized into four parts, vacuum-assisted self-assembly, sol-gel process, electrospinning, and vacuum-assisted filtration. In each section, the design strategies and their responding disadvantages have been comprehensively discussed. The challenges and prospects concerning the superhydrophilic carbon-based separation membranes for oily wastewater purification are also summarized to arouse researchers to carry out more studies.

Superhydrophilicity and Electronic Modulation on Self-Supported Lignin-Derived Carbon Coupled with NiO@MoNi for Enhancing Urea Electrolysis.

Developing highly efficient biomass-derived carbon-based electrocatalysts remains challenging for urea electrolysis because most of these electrocatalysts show powder morphology, which can lead to Ostwald ripening during the reaction process, and its reaction mechanism should be further verified. Herein, self-supported lignin-derived carbon coupling NiO@MoNi heterojunction (NiO@MoNi/C) possesses superhydrophilic properties and electronic modulation, boosting the performance of urea electrolysis. Electrochemical results show that an indirect oxidation step for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurs on the surface of NiO@MoNi/C.

Maximizing the utilization of active sites and tuning the electronic-state are crucial yet extremely challenging in enhancing the ability of alloy-based catalysts to catalyze hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Here, the 3D self-supported N-doped carbon nanotube arrays (NCNTAs) was synthesized on Ni foam by the drop-casting and calcination method, where the metal Co and CoFe alloy were enclosed at the NCNT tip (denoted as Co/CoFe@NCNT/NF). The Co/CoFe hetero-interface formation led to changes in the electronic state, which can optimize the adsorption free energy of reaction intermediates and thereby boost the intrinsic catalytic performance.

Biomass-activated carbon-based superhydrophobic sponge with photothermal properties for adsorptive separation of waste oil.

J Hazard Mater

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hainan University, Haikou 570228, PR China. Electronic address:

The increasing discharge of oily wastewater from life poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. To develop green, efficient, and low-cost materials for oil-water separation, a superhydrophobic photothermal oil-absorbing sponge (CAC-PDA@MF) was prepared by using nanoscale coconut shell activated carbon (CAC) loaded on a melamine sponge in this study. The sponge had excellent superhydrophobicity (WCA of 159.

Stimulus-responsive membranes demonstrate promising applications in switchable oil/water emulsion separations. However, they are unsuitable for the treatment of double emulsions like oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) and water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsions. For efficient separation of these complicated emulsions, fine control over the wettability, response time, and aperture structure of the membrane is required.

Deep Reconstruction of the NiFeSP Nanosheet Catalyst for Large Current-Density Water Oxidation.

State Key Laboratory of Chemistry and Utilization of Carbon Based Energy Resources; College of Chemistry, Xinjiang University, Urumqi 830017, Xinjiang, PR China.

Evidence shows that the crucial factor in achieving efficient water electrolysis for hydrogen production is the design and synthesis of electrocatalysts that exhibit both high performance and cost-effectiveness for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the NiFeSP nanosheets were facilely prepared on a Ni foam (NF) substrate through a cost-effective electrodeposition method. The electrode structure composed of nanosheets offers a high density of active sites and superior electrical conductivity, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the OER.
