This procedure is carried out via a full sternotomy using standard aortic and bicaval cannulations. For the aortic and pulmonary anastomoses, selective antegrade unilateral cerebral perfusion is used after cooling the body temperature to 26 °Celsius. A 12-mm Hancock conduit is interposed between the pulmonary artery and the proximal descending aorta using standard running suture techniques.

Cancer evolution is a multifaceted process leading to dysregulation of cellular expansion and differentiation through somatic mutations and epigenetic dysfunction. Clonal expansion and evolution is driven by cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic selective pressures, which can be captured with increasing resolution by single-cell and bulk DNA sequencing. Despite the extensive genomic alterations revealed in profiling studies, there remain limited experimental systems to model and perturb evolutionary processes.

Beta-Amyloid Related Neurodegenerative and Neurovascular Diseases: Potential Implications for Transfusion Medicine.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a brain disorder caused by the accumulation of beta-amyloid in small blood vessels, leading to increased risk of bleeding in the brain and associated neurocognitive decline.
  • It often appears with age, frequently coexists with Alzheimer's Disease, and can result in significant health issues like spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage and progressive dementia.
  • Recent studies suggest a potential link between blood transfusions and the transmission of CAA, raising concerns about public health and the need for further research on whether CAA can be transmitted through blood, alongside its implications for screening practices.

Modelling the effect of cell motility on mixing and invasion in epithelial monolayers.

Collective cell invasion underlies several biological processes such as wound healing, embryonic development, and cancerous invasion. Here, we investigate the impact of cell motility on invasion in epithelial monolayers and its coupling to cellular mechanical properties, such as cell-cell adhesion and cortex contractility. We develop a two-dimensional computational model for cells with active motility based on the cellular Potts model, which predicts that the cellular invasion speed is mainly determined by active cell motility and is independent of the biological and mechanical properties of the cells.

Background: Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most malignant childhood brain cancer. Group 3 MB subtype accounts for about 25% of MB diagnoses and is associated with the most unfavorable outcomes. Herein, we report that more than half of group 3 MB tumors express melanoma antigens (MAGEs), which are potential prognostic and therapeutic markers.
