Article Abstract

It was believed that the Se-rich synthesis condition can suppress the formation of deep-level donor defect V (selenium vacancy) in Sb Se and is thus critical for fabricating high-efficiency Sb Se solar cells. However, here it is shown that by first-principles calculations the density of V increases unexpectedly to 10 cm when the Se chemical potential increases, so Se-rich condition promotes rather than suppresses the formation of V . Therefore, high density of V is thermodynamically inevitable, no matter under Se-poor or Se-rich conditions. This abnormal behavior can be explained by a physical concept "defect-correlation", i.e., when donor and acceptor defects compensate each other, all defects become correlated with each other due to the formation energy dependence on Fermi level which is determined by densities of all ionized defects. In quasi-1D Sb Se , there are many defects and the complicated defect-correlation can give rise to abnormal behaviors, e.g., lowering Fermi level and thus decreasing the formation energy of ionized donor V in Se-rich Sb Se . Such behavior exists also in Sb S . It explains the recent experiments that the extremely Se-rich condition causes the efficiency drop of Sb Se solar cells, and demonstrates that the common chemical intuition and defect engineering strategies may be invalid in compensated semiconductors.

Recovery of Selenium-Enriched Polysaccharides from Residues: Comparison on Structure and Antioxidant Activity by Different Extraction Methods.

Antioxidants (Basel)

October 2024

School of Modern Industry for Selenium Science and Engineering, National R&D Center for Se-Rich Agricultural Products Processing Technology, Wuhan Polytechnic University, Wuhan 430023, China.

The residues from selenium-enriched after the extraction of protein were still rich in polysaccharides. Thus, the recovery of selenium polysaccharides (SePSs) was compared using hot water extraction and ultrasonic-assisted extraction techniques. The yield, extraction rate, purity, specific energy consumption, and content of total and organic selenium from different SePS extracts were determined.

  • - The industrial process for making kudzu starch often reduces flavonoids like puerarin, so pretreatments such as ultrasonic techniques are important to enhance its biological activity and nutrient interactions.
  • - Ultrasonic pretreatment increased the binding of puerarin to kudzu starch and changed the particle size, leading to larger complexes compared to untreated samples, as revealed by various analyses.
  • - The study found that ultrasound altered how the starch molecules interacted, creating new hydrogen bonds and resulting in gels with improved properties like higher viscosity and elasticity, showing the potential for more valuable kudzu products.

Using as research material, callus induction and culture were carried out, and high-yielding cell lines were screened to establish a suspension culture system that promotes callus growth and the accumulation of the "total saponins" (total content of triterpenoid glycosides or ginsenosides). Using the root as an explant, the medium for callus induction and proliferation was optimized by adjusting culture conditions (initial inoculation amount, carbon source, shaking speed, hormone concentration, culture time) and a high-yielding cell line with efficient proliferation and high total saponins content was screened out. The conditions of suspension culture were refined to find out the most suitable conditions for the suspension culture of callus, and finally, the suspension culture system was established.

Understanding the transition from nonplanar to planar clusters is crucial for the controllable synthesis of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers. Using PtSe as a model, we investigate how the chemical environment influences the nucleation and growth stages of monolayer PtSe through structure searching and first-principles calculations. We established a comprehensive database of platinum selenide clusters (PtSe, = 1-10), analyzing 2095 unique clusters and identifying 191 stable isomers and 63 structures with the lowest formation energy on the convex hull.
