Two glyceryl ethers, 1-O-hexadecyl glycerol and 1-O-cis-octadec-11-enyl glycerol, chimyl and paramecyl alcohol, respectively, were quantified in total phospholipids and five glycerophospholipid classes from cells and cilia of the ciliated protozoon, Paramecium tetraurelia. The ether content of 2-aminoethyl phosphonoglycerolipid was 85-90 mole %. Concentrations of ethers were greatest in the ethanolamine phosphonolipids greater than phosphatidylcholines greater than phosphatidylserines greater than phosphatidylethanolamines greater than phosphatidylinositols. The glyceryl ether concentrations in total cellular phospholipids increased with culture age in P. tetraurelia and P. multimicronucleatum cells. The glyceryl ether concentrations in the phospholipids of P. tetraurelia cilia remained constant from mid log to stationary phase of culture growth. Paramecium tetraurelia phospholipid glyceryl ether concentrations were made greater by supplementation of cultures with chimyl alcohol.

Lotus seeds, also known as Nelumbinis semen, has been utilized for over 7,000 years as vegetable, functional food and medicine. In this study, we primarily investigated the anticancer effects of lotus seed extracts, particularly of the methanolic extract (MELS) on cell proliferation inhibition, apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest in ovarian cancer cell lines. Further, we studied the phytochemical composition of the MELS by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis.

Bicelles, an artificial disk-shaped lipid bilayer, are commonly used for the structural and functional characterization of membrane-bound proteins in an environment similar to that in intracellular membranes. Because the dynamics of the lipids that constitute bicelles exert a significant impact on the structure and function of the inserted proteins, we investigated the mobility of lipid molecules in bicelles composed of DMPC (14:0 PC) and DHPC (06:0 PC) using solution NMR and MD calculations. C R relaxation experiments for the acyl groups demonstrated that increasing bicelle sizes limit the rotational diffusion of acyl chain H-C bonds in DMPC.

Stress and anxiety are significant psychological challenges in modern society, which have led to a rapidly growing market for functional foods, including those reported to relieve stress, as alternatives to psychoactive drugs. Among these, diacyl glyceryl ethers (DAGE) derived from deep-sea shark liver oil have gained attention for their strong antioxidant properties and potential mental health benefits. Building on preliminary evidence suggesting DAGE's efficacy in enhancing stress resilience and modulating biochemical pathways associated with reduced oxidative stress, the present study aimed to examine their effects on stress responses in two specific mouse strains.

Background: Re-irradiation of recurrent head and neck cancer (HNC) is often limited by tumour adherence to critical structures and/or radiation tolerance of critical normal tissues. Iopofosine I 131 (CLR 131) is a targeted small molecular phospholipid ether (PLE) drug conjugate that delivers iodine-131 selectively to tumour cells. We conducted a phase 1, single-centre, open-label study to determine whether CLR 131 given with reduced dose of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) would be tolerable and feasible.

Regioselective oxidation of glyceryl alkyl ethers is of utmost importance for the fabrication of substituted hydroxy ketones and enantiopure 1,2-diols as green solvents and pharmaceutical building blocks, respectively. An engineered glycerol dehydrogenase from Bacillus stearothermophilus was described to perform the regioselective oxidation of alkyl glycerol ethers, identifying position 252 as key for accepting larger substrates than glycerol. In this work, we further engineer that position through partial saturation mutagenesis to broaden the substrate scope toward other glycerol derivatives, improving enzyme kinetics and minimizing product inhibition.
