For development of green and sustainable energy, it is of importance to search highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in energy conversion devices. Herein, CoFe alloyed nanocrystals embedded in N-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CoFe@NCNTs) were facilely synthetized by one-step co-pyrolysis with the mixture of triamterene, metal chlorides and graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN). The resultant CoFe@NCNTs exhibited excellent ORR activity with the positive shifts in the onset potential (E = 0.97 V) and half-wave potential (E = 0.88 V), outperforming commercial Pt/C (E = 0.96 V; E = 0.84 V). Compared to metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based strategy for synthesis of low-cost carbon-based ORR catalysts, this method is simple and convenient, coupled by avoiding the complicated synthesis of MOFs and its ligands. This work provides a promising route to fabricate advanced transition-metal-based carbon catalysts in the researches correlated with energy conversion devices.

A pyrrole-fused analogue of warped nanographene, designated as deca-nitrogen doped 'WNG' (azaWNG), was synthesized through the annular fusion of decapyrroylcorannulene. The resulting azaWNG exhibited extremely limited solubility in common organic solvents and was characterized solely by mass spectrometry. Theoretical calculations revealed that azaWNG has a sunflower-like molecular structure with electron-deficient corannulene as the core and electron-rich pyrrole as the petals, demonstrating a significantly narrower energy gap compared to all-carbon WNG.

Herein, a novel nanocomposite was developed to adjust the textural properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorptive applications. To this end, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (RC) was embedded into MIL-101(Cr) crystals, named RC-ML-x nanocomposites. The prepared nanoadsorbents were thoroughly characterized by different techniques.

Proton-electron transfer (PET) processes play a pivotal role in numerous electrochemical reactions; yet, effectively harnessing them remains a formidable challenge. Consequently, unveiling the PET pathway is imperative to elucidate the factors influencing the efficiency and selectivity of small molecule electrochemical conversion. In this study, a Zn-NC model catalyst with N and C vacancies was synthesized using a hydriding method to investigate the universal impact of PET on CO electroreduction.

Blue-emissive nitrogen-doped chiral carbon dots (d-NCD230 and l-NCD230) exhibiting antipodal chiroptical activity, synthesized from the thermal pyrolysis of citric acid and d/l-aspartic acid in 1:2 molar ratios, have been explored as chirality-based fluorescent turn-off/on probes for the detection of Hg and l-cysteine (l-Cys). Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy revealed that the chiroptical activity originates from a synergy among intrinsic chirality, chiral precursors on the NCD surface, and hybridization of lower energy levels within the embedded chiral chromophore. Quantitative analysis of optical asymmetry using the Kuhn asymmetry factor () at the CD signal of 312 nm showed a higher value for d-NCD230 (1.

We have synthesized a novel series of nitrogen-doped pentagon-embedded coumarinacenes, namely carbazole-coumarins, a tandem 1,4-elimination Diels-Alder aromatization reaction. These planar, -substituted carbazole-coumarins exhibit excellent functionalizability, enhanced photostability and solvent polarity-tunable absorption and blue-to-red emission with notably high fluorescence quantum yields, attesting to their remarkable photophysical properties. These attributes highlight the carbazole-coumarins' potential as robust and efficient fluorescent materials for diverse applications in various fields, including as probes for studying biomolecular systems and dynamics.
