Demand for high-performance biocomposites is increasing due to their ease of processing, low environmental impact, and in-service performance. This study investigated the effect of boric acid modification of wood flour on polycarbonate (PC) wood composites' thermal stability, fire retardancy, water absorption, and creep behavior. The composites' fire retardancy increased with increasing wood flour content, and their char residue increased by 102.3% compared to that of pure PC. However, the water absorption of the resulting composites increased due to the hydroxyl groups of the wood flour. Wood flour also improved the composites' anti-creep properties. The excellent fire retardancy and anti-creep properties of wood-PC composites expand their use in the construction sector.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have broad application prospects in many fields because of their high energy density. However, the poor heat resistance of polyolefin membranes and uneven lithium deposition result in battery failure and even infamous thermal runaway behavior. To improve the intrinsic safety of batteries, fire-retardant, thermally conductive, electrospinning strategies are employed to acquire a functional polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber separator (PAN@FBN/TPP) containing modified boron nitride (FBN) and triphenyl phosphate (TPP).

In this work, the coprecipitation approach was successfully used to create Mg-Al hydrotalcite-like inhibitors modified with varying amounts of Zn, and their characteristics were assessed. The findings indicate that the flame retardancy of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (MgAl-LDHs) is not significantly affected by Zn content. By adding MgAl-LDHs, the temperature at which the exothermic reaction started to occur was raised from 146.

The use of traditional sealing materials in buildings poses a significant risk of fire and noise pollution. To address these issues, we propose a novel composite functional sealant designed to enhance fire safety and sound insulation. The sealant incorporates a unique four-component filler system consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decorated with layered double hydroxides (LDHs), ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP), and artificial marble waste powder (AMWP), namely CLAA.

The current work presents the flame-retardant performance of hybrid polypropylene composites, reinforced with specific short woven flax fabrics (SWFs), short basalt fibers (BFs), and rice husk powder (RHP), using polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (MAPP) as the coupling agent. Horizontal burning test (HBT), microcalorimeter test (MCT), and cone calorimeter test (CCT) were conducted on these composites. The formulations used were 25% SWF/PP, 25% SWF/20% BF/PP, and 25% SWF/20% BF/PP with 6% RHP and 25% SWF/20% BF/PP with varying RHP contents (6, 12, and 18%) in combination with 6% MAPP.

Wood has complex composition and structure, which make it difficult to achieve consistent and controllable treatment. A self-flowing process presented for the chemical treatment of wood is inspired by liquid transportation in trees during photosynthesis and tree growth, whereby liquid in the soil is brought through the natural vessels and/or fiber tracheids. In this process, wood lumbers are placed in a tank containing treatment chemicals such as preservatives, fire retardants, or reactive agents.
