Prudent Physician Anger in Patient-Physician Interactions.

Health Care Anal

January 2025

Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care, University of Auckland, Private Bag 92019, Auckland, New Zealand.

This paper questions the conventional wisdom that physicians must suppress anger in response to patient misbehaviour. It distinguishes the emotion of anger from its expression, which leans toward concerned frustration and disappointment for the sake of professionalism in patient care. Drawing on the framework of person-centred health care as a virtue ethic, the paper first suggests four reasons why and when physician anger toward patient behaviour may occasionally be appropriate: the inevitability of sometimes feeling angry, anger as a cognitive and behavioural resource, physician well-being, and potential patient benefit.

Deleterious Impacts of Western diet on Jejunum Function and Health are Reversible.

Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol

December 2024

Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University, Glendale, Arizona, 85308 USA.

The goal of this study was to determine whether the influence of high-fat high-sugar diet (Western diet) on intestinal function and health was reversible. We measured transepithelial short circuit current (Isc), across freshly isolated segments of jejunum from male C57Bl/6J mice randomly assigned to one of the following groups for the study duration: high-fat high-sugar diet for 24-weeks (HFHS), HFHS diet for 12-weeks then switched to standard chow and water for a further 12 weeks (Std), and lean controls (standard chow and water for 24-weeks). At the completion of the study, segments of jejunum were frozen for western blot determination of key proteins involved in secretory and absorptive functions, as well as senescence.

TIGIT CD4 regulatory T cells enhance PD-1 expression on CD8 T cells and promote tumor growth in a murine ovarian cancer model.

December 2024

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, The Affiliated Hospital of Nankai University, Tianjin No. 4 Hospital, Tianjin, 300222, China.

Immune checkpoint-based immunotherapy has shown limited efficacy in the treatment of ovarian cancer. In recent years, the emergence of immune checkpoint co-targeting therapies, led by the combination targeting of TIGIT and FAK, has shown promise in ovarian cancer treatment. Our preliminary research indicates that TIGIT is predominantly expressed in regulatory T cells during ovarian cancer.

Prior studies indicate that emotions, particularly high-arousal emotions, may elicit rapid intuitive thinking, thereby decreasing the ability to recognize misinformation. Yet, few studies have distinguished prior affective states from emotional reactions to false news, which could influence belief in falsehoods in different ways. Extending a study by Martel et al.
