Published: December 2022

Purpose: We hypothesize that the presence of iris depigmentation is associated with the prediction of cytomegalovirus (CMV) as the etiology of chronic or recurrent anterior uveitis.

Methods: A prospective cohort study on patients with recurrent or chronic anterior uveitis. Pre-operative data on iris depigmentation and corneal endothelial cell densities were compared between eyes with and without CMV.

Results: Forty-one eyes of 38 subjects with a mean age of 61.1 ± 11.2 years old were recruited. Seventeen eyes were positive for CMV. A greater proportion of eyes with CMV showed severe or diffuse iris depigmentation than eyes without CMV, and possessed larger corneal endothelial cells ( = .028). When severe iris depigmentation was present with a reduced endothelial cell density, the positive and negative predictive values were raised to 100.0% and 64.9% from 41.5% and 58.5%, respectively.

Conclusion: Iris depigmentation is a potential clinical biomarker in predicting CMV in chronic or recurrent anterior uveitis.

Anterior Uveitis and Uveal Depigmentation in a Dog With Vitiligo.

Case Rep Vet Med

January 2025

Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA.

The objective of this study is to describe the clinical and histologic features of a dog that developed anterior uveitis and uveal depigmentation in association with vitiligo. A 3-year-old, female-spayed, Bernese Mountain Dog with a history of bilateral idiopathic anterior uveitis developed iris depigmentation, leukotrichia, and skin depigmentation. The initial diagnostic evaluation for uveitis was unremarkable, including general bloodwork, urinalysis, infectious disease testing, thoracic radiographs, and abdominal ultrasound.

Genotypic and phenotypic analysis of an oculocutaneous albinism patient: a case report and review of the literature.

J Med Case Rep

December 2024

Shaanxi Eye Hospital, Xi'an People's Hospital (Xi'an Fourth Hospital), Affiliated People's Hospital, Northwest University, Xi'an, 710004, Shaanxi, China.

Background: Oculocutaneous albinism is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by congenital melanin deficiency, resulting in hypopigmentation of the eyes, hair, and skin. This study included a Chinese family with an oculocutaneous albinism pedigree, in which the proband presented with oculocutaneous albinismcombined with secondary angle closure, which has been rarely reported in previous literature. This article primarily focused on the clinical and genetic examination results of this patient and provided recommendations for ophthalmologist to treat patients with oculocutaneous albinism in clinical practice.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to test whether oral administration of nicotinamide riboside (NR), the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) precursors, protect retina ganglion cells (RGCs) from neurodegeneration in DBA/2J (D2) mice, which is a widely used mouse model of age-related inherited glaucoma.

Method: Oral NR or NAM administration (NR low dose: 1150mg/kg; NR high dose: 4200mg/kg; NAM low dose group: 500mg/kg; NAM high dose: 2000mg/kg of body weight per day) essentially started when D2 mice were 4 or 9 months old and continued up to 12 months old. Control cohort identically received food/water without NAM or NR.

Article Synopsis
  • A 22-year-old male was diagnosed with ocular albinism (OA) and presented with symptoms including skin depigmentation and abnormal eye features.
  • A detailed eye exam revealed issues like nystagmus (involuntary eye movement) and foveal hypoplasia (underdevelopment of the central retina).
  • The report emphasizes the need for thorough exams and genetic testing for proper diagnosis and management of OA patients.
