In recent years, layered double hydroxide-biochar (LDH-BC) composites as adsorbents and catalysts for contaminants removal (inorganic anions, heavy metals, and organics) have received increasing attention and became a new research point. It is because of the good chemical stability, abundant surface functional groups, excellent anion exchange ability, and good electronic properties of LDH-BC composites. Hence, we offer an overall review on the developments and processes in the synthesis of LDH-BC composites as adsorbents and catalysts. Special attention is devoted to the strategies for enhancing the properties of LDH-BC composites, including (1) magnetic treatment, (2) acid treatment, (3) alkali treatment, (4) controlling metal ion ratios, (5) LDHs intercalation, and (6) calcination. In addition, further studies are called for LDH-BC composites and potential areas for future application of LDH-BC composites are also proposed.

Compound contamination of soil with heavy metals copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) triggered by mining development has become a serious problem. To solve this problem, in this paper, corncob kernel, which is widely available and inexpensive, was used as the raw material of biochar and modified by loading CaAl-layered double hydroxides to synthesize biochar-loaded CaAl-layered double hydroxide composites (CaAl-LDH/BC). After soil remediation experiments, either BC or CaAl-LDH/BC can increase soil pH, and the available phosphorus content and available potassium content in soil.

Layered double hydroxide-biochar composites (LDH@BCs) have been developed for ammonia nitrogen (AN) and phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater. Improvement of LDH@BCs was limited due to the lack of comparative evaluation based on LDH@BCs characteristics and synthetic methods and information on the adsorption properties of LDH@BCs for N and P from natural wastewater. In this study, MgFe-LDH@BCs were synthesized by three different co-precipitation procedures.

Improving the adsorption ability of layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been considered as a promising strategy to promote its photodegradation of aqueous pollutants. In this work, nickel-aluminium layered double hydroxides (NiAl-LDH)/biochar nanocomposites were prepared using a simple coprecipitation method, and then applied in synergistic adsorption-photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. In addition, the governing TC removal mechanisms by the nanocomposites were revealed.

Removal of phosphorus (P) from wastewater and its recovery as a fertilizer are solutions to both P pollution control and resource recycling for agriculture. In this study, various layered double hydroxide biochar composites (LDH/BCs), namely, Zn-Al-LDH/BC, Mg-Al-LDH/BC, and Mg-Fe-LDH/BC, were synthesized to remove P from secondary effluents and then applied as fertilizers. Batch experiments showed that LDH/BCs could adsorb P in fast kinetics, with adsorption capacities ranging 35.

In this study, CuCo layered double hydroxide/biochar composite (CuCo LDH/BC) was prepared and employed for activating HO to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP), a common fluroquinolone antibiotic detected in water environment. The as-synthesized catalysts were also comprehensively characterized to study the physiochemical properties. For the catalytic activity, the degradation rate of CuCo LDH/BC to CIP was approximately 1.
