is an enteropathogen that causes neonatal meningitis, septicemia, and necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants and newborns with a mortality rate of 15 to 80%. Powdered and dairy formulas (P-DF) have been implicated as major transmission vehicles and subsequently the presence of this pathogen in P-DF led to product recalls in Chile in 2017. The objective of this study was to use whole genome sequencing (WGS) and laboratory studies to characterize strains from the contaminated products. Seven strains were identified as , and the remaining strain was . All strains adhered to a neuroblastoma cell line, and 31 virulence genes were predicted by WGS. The antibiograms varied between strains. and included and genes, conferring resistance to colistin and cephalothin, respectively. The strains encoded I-E and I-F CRISPR-Cas systems, and carried IncFII(pECLA), Col440I, and Col(pHHAD28) plasmids. In summary, WGS enabled the identification of strains and revealed multiple antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. These findings support the decision to recall the contaminated powdered and dairy formulas from the Chilean market in 2017.

Films and coatings based on biopolymers have been extensively studied in recent years since they have less impact on the environment, can be obtained from renewable sources, have good coating and film-forming capacity, are biodegradable and can have interesting nutritional properties. In the present study, sheep's cheese whey powder (SCWP) was used to produce edible cheese coatings. Six types of cheese samples were produced: without coating (CON); treated with natamycin (NAT); with SCWP coating without antimicrobials (WCO); with SCWP coating with a commercial bioprotective culture (WFQ); with SCWP coating with kombucha tea (WKO); and with SCWP coating with oregano essential oil (WEO).

The objective of this investigation was to examine the effects of distinct dosages of infant formula and diverse formula constituents on the growth and development of weaned rats. Fifty specific pathogen-free (SPF) male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats aged 3 weeks were divided into the basic diet group, 20% ordinary milk powder group, 20% special formula milk powder group, 30% ordinary milk powder group, and 30% special formula milk powder group randomly. After 28 days of feeding, compared with the basic diet group, the body mass and brain/body weight of rats in the 30% ordinary and special formula milk powder groups were decreased.
